I’m happy to report that it’s officially race week for me! This has been a long training cycle (or so it seems) and I’m glad my race is finally coming up. I need to consciously work on the sleep front this week since I’ve missed a lot of sleep over the last two weeks or so. It’s catching up to me and that’s the last thing I want to worry about come race day. In addition, we had some unexpected travel in the middle of last week which definitely threw me off kilter a bit.
It’s Finally Race Week! Spring Training: Week 14
Monday — 6 miles + strength training
Monday’s workout was pretty solid. I had strides on the plan and despite my best effort to keep the pace easy during the easy portion, I was running fairly hard for the duration. It felt right so I went with it.
Thursday — 5.02 + strength training
After traveling on Tuesday and Wednesday, I was completely exhausted and truly could have used another rest day. But I didn’t want to be off for three days in a row so I met up with Eugenia and we ran a shaky 3-miler together. Afterward, I went home and finished up 2 additional miles and hit the home gym for some strength training.
Friday — 6.31 miles
I had a great run on Friday. Tempo intervals were on the plan so tempo intervals I ran. I ran on the faster end of my pace range which was surprising, tough, and really great. It was a really strong run overall.
Saturday — 4.4 miles + strength training
On Saturday morning, I met with two groups for 5K training. The first group I met with had a great workout. After their workout, I met with my brand new training group. They are more than ready to take on a new challenge. It’s going to be an amazing round of training for the new 5K group! I’m looking forward to it.
After 5K training I headed to the gym for a self defense class. I feel like I’m learning a lot. I’m anxious for the last class when our instructor is basically going to attack us and test our skills. Should be scary? fun? empowering.
Sunday — 9.01 miles
Sunday was a mess. Looking at my splits, it was fine. But being out on the road was really taxing. I knew it was going to be warm on Sunday but I grossly underestimated how warm. I should have started running earlier but I was so exhausted from the week that I really needed any extra sleep I could snag.
The sun was shining in full force and despite fairly strong winds, I struggled for a lot of the run due to being tired and too hot. But I listened to a podcast, drank lots of water, and fueled throughout. Toward the end of my run my husband and kids joined me on bike. It was nice to have the company. Plus I was trying to a) stay in front of them and b) keep up if they passed me. It was a welcome challenge and helped me stay on task with my chip-down splits. Despite it appearing to be a solid run, I was thankful it was over!
Race Week
Since this is officially race week for me, I’m already second-guessing everything. I’m sure my coach will be fielding a couple more last-minute panicky emails as he does every training cycle. I’ve already sent him three in the last two days. At least he knows what to expect from me. 😉
Race week = fun + nerve wracking.
Aside from a couple tough workouts this week, my mileage will be low. I’ll be meeting with my 5K runners again this weekend and then race day is Sunday!
In the spirit of Tuesdays on the Run, I’m hoping I don’t do anything foolish come race day. I don’t plan on changing anything during race week or race day. Hopefully I’ll have an uneventful, successful race. 🙂
