I’ve been the head coach for cross country and track and field for the last five years. One thing that I learned early on, from the great Dr. Joe Vigil, is that setting the tone for practice is key. It helps athletes focus, and it gives meaning to workouts. I use inspirational quotes in my own running and training, too.

I start every week of my cross country season with a quote to set the tone and expectations for my athletes. It helps us focus on our goals, and work on things to improve for the next race. I encourage you to think of a quote or mantra to set the tone for your week, and see if it helps you keep the momentum going!
