5 Winter Fitness Tips
1. Dress for Success
This means layering! When running in winter, it’s important to remember that you will get hot — and you will get cold. Finding appropriate winter-wear will keep your body happy and your runs feeling productive.
2. Wear Cute Stuff
This applies to running, fitness, and when you’re out shopping or at the grocery store. Wearing cute wintry stuff will put a smile on your face and help you breeze through even the most blustery of days. Check out these jackets that are 60% off! OMG!
3. Give a Gift!
Chanukah is complete. Christmas is around the corner. But the amount of sales that are currently happening — or about to — are incredible. You can snag some really great deals for friends and family — like these matching sets from adidas. Who doesn’t want to match??!
4. Eat Nutritious Foods
In all seriousness, aside from dressing for winter running, wearing cute stuff on cold days, and giving gifts, it’s important to maintain a diet of nutrient-dense foods. It’s so incredibly easy to get lazy and reach for the cookies and the cheese when it gets cold out, but our bodies crave an array of vitamins and minerals. Cookies and cheese are fine, but maybe start with a hearty vegetable soup, or a winter kale salad. Give yourself the nutrient-boost before opting for the refined sugars and fats.
5. Stay Social
The last, and possibly most important of the winter fitness tips, is to stay social. 5% of the US population experiences seasonal affective disorder (SAD) for up to 40% of the year. That’s not insignificant. And even if you don’t experience true SAD, if your mood tends to take a dip when there’s less sunlight, it’s important to stay social — even when you’d rather hibernate. Seeing and talking with friends can boost your mood and jump start your day. Go for a walk, a run, or a fitness class. Or, even coffee! We are social beings. We need to be social.
And if you are the 5% affected by SAD, it can be treated. Please seek medical advice.
