Today’s topic for Tuesdays on the Run is fitting — scenes from my winter run. And oh boy, do I have some of those.
Can I just vent real quick here? I’m so over winter. For some reason I wasn’t nearly as miserable last winter as I have been in years past. And somehow the SAD decided to rear its ugly head again this year. I’m so over the gray, I’m so over the cold, I’m so over not being able to take my dogs and kids for walks. I’m just over it!!!!
Thank you. I feel better. 🙂 Back to regularly scheduled programming…
Last week was a pretty badass week of training. The only day that didn’t go as planned was Wednesday.
Scenes from my Winter Run + Spring Training Week 5
Monday — strength + yoga
I spent about an hour doing yoga, core yoga, and working on my hips and glutes on Monday. I’m so happy I’m back in this routine of the “extras.” I already feel like I’m getting stronger. And I’m definitely more confident — confident that I’m not going to destroy my bones and ligaments from lack of strength work. It’s a nice feeling.
Tuesday — 6 miles
I treadmilled it on Tuesday. It was tough getting in the groove and I stopped a bunch of times to have a snack, drink some water, and use the restroom. But hey, that’s one of the advantages of running on a treadmill, no? It’s less than ideal to stop and start but it is what it is I guess.
Wednesday — 5.22 miles
Wednesday was supposed to be hill sprints. When I mentioned I might be running on the treadmill, my coach gave me a different workout. But then at the last minute I decided to run outside with my friend Eugenia. This was both a really amazing and really stupid decision. Amazing because I very much needed to run with a friend. Stupid because the weather sucked.
It was cold as heck, the path we chose to run was hard packed snow in the places it had been plowed, other places it wasn’t plowed so we were essentially doing high-knees drills through the park, and then when we were on pavement (because we wised up and decided to run side streets) it was snow-balling so hard it felt like little daggers attacking our faces.
It was a mess!!!
But, it’s always fun to run with a friend. Plus there’s always the added bonus of fun winter running stories.
Thursday — 5 miles
Thursday was much less exciting than Wednesday. I ran 5 miles on the treadmill. Woohoo.
Friday — hips and glutes
I’m shocked how well I’m sticking to my hips and glutes workouts. But I am! And I love it.
Saturday — 9 miles
I had a very pleasant run on Saturday. I met up with a couple friends and ran a nearby park. It was brisk — the “feels like” was around 3˚ when we started. But the sun was shining which made all the difference. Great conversation, sunshine, and some fun miles was just what I needed on Saturday. Afterward, we celebrated with breakfast at one of our favorite local eateries. Mmmm.
I still haven’t pulled the trigger for Grandma’s yet. What’s my problem? I dunno! I’ll have mega miles to run solo through the end of May and most of June. I much prefer running with people so I’m fairly certain that has something to do with it. I’ve got time to figure it out but I need to act soon.
This week I’m hoping to get outside as much as possible, but I’m not entirely sure the weather will cooperate. It’s supposed to warm up but also rain. Summer rain is one thing. A winter run in rain… eh… maybe not. We’ll see. I really just need straight up sunshine for about a week to get my noodle back to neutral. Know what I mean?
