Off Season Training: Staying Trained in the Off Season

November 15, 2016

As you likely know if you’re a regular blog follower, Tuesdays are ordinarily my “training post” days. I’m going to stick with that for this week but I’m undecided if I’m going to continue with training posts when I’m not actually in training for anything specifically. We’ll see how things shake out over the upcoming weeks.

Last week was an “okay” week. My mom is in town visiting and I haven’t wanted to take away much of our time together with my running. Plus I was still technically in marathon recovery. I tried to take it easy as much as I could while still getting some leg movement in here and there.

Off Season Training: Staying Trained in the Off Season

Tuesday — 3.11 miles

Tuesday was a nice run. I bumped into a friend I hadn’t seen in a while and caught up with her briefly (she was in car, I was on foot) toward the beginning of my run. Turns out she hasn’t been running in a while due to injury. I encouraged her to see an area chiropractor to hopefully get some answers. The rest of my run was really nice. The weather was near perfect, too.

Wednesday — 4.25 miles

I had a great run on Wednesday morning. It was very cathartic. Although I was in a funk for most of the day, my run helped me immensely.

Friday — 2.12 miles

On Friday I met up with friends Carole and Candice. They were both racing on Saturday, so our run was supposed to be a 2-mile shakeout run for Candice and a longer run for Carole (and me). Unfortunately it started spitting (or hailing) on us while the temperature dropped rapidly. When we got to the drop off spot for Candice, Carole informed me her calf was hurting (eek!). We scraped the rest of the run. I was secretly thrilled we scraped the run because frankly, I was not dressed appropriately for the conditions.

Saturday — 4.48 miles

I met up with David on Saturday for some nice miles together. I’m really not ready for the cold weather, to be perfectly honest, but it was nice to run with him. We haven’t run together in a while and it was really great to catch up and hear about his new baby (11 weeks!) and how parenthood is treating him these days.

I had planned on running long on Sunday but after all my friends bailed on me, I realized I had zero motivation to get out there. I was mentally not in a great space, plus it was cold. It was next to impossible to convince myself that running 8 miles was a swell idea when I’d rather be at home in a hoodie and fleece pajama pants. So at home in my hoodie and pj pants I stayed, and it was glorious!

This week I’ve got a couple longer runs. I haven’t decided which turkey trot I’m doing next week, if any. The one in downtown CLE is a tradition but I just don’t know if I’m feeling it this year. I live much farther out from it than I have in years past. There’s one literally down the road from me at the same time so I might have to go rogue and run the nearby one instead. We’ll see how that goes.
