The Marine Corps Marathon Weekend Experience

October 14, 2016

Since today is the final Friday Five hosted by the DC Trifecta, today I’m gonna tell you the five things I’m really looking forward to in regard to the Marine Corps Marathon weekend at the end of October. It just seems fitting since they’re in DC and I’ll be traveling there in a few short weeks.

Before I begin, I need to preface by saying this is my first MCM. I’m not entirely sure what to expect. But I do know I’m excited. Without further ado, here are the five things I’m looking forward to about the Marine Corps Marathon weekend:

The Marine Corps Marathon Weekend Experience: 5 Things I'm Looking Forward To | Running on Happy

The Marine Corps Marathon Weekend Experience:

5 things I’m looking forward to…

1. The race atmosphere

I’m not a big race person. At all. I much prefer smaller races where I can zone out and just chiiiiiillllllll. Having said that, I’m over-the-moon excited for MCM because of the race atmosphere and crowd support. I think it’ll be a phenomenal day and I’m super psyched to be a part of it. The Marines, the spectators, the runners — the whole dang thing. I’m so excited to experience it for myself.

2. Being in my favorite city

I love, love, love DC. Love. If I could live anywhere in the world, it would be Washington, DC. My aunt and cousins are from there, my brothers used to live there, so I feel as though DC is my second home. It’s a crazy city with the traffic and the winding streets and the traffic circles, but I can navigate DC traffic and streets like I’ve lived there my entire life.

Oh yeah. And all the monuments and sights and museums. Favorite city!!

3. Finding new people, places and things

To piggyback #2 above, this time around I’m staying at an AirBnB in Columbia Heights — somewhere I’ve never been before. I’m looking forward to exploring a new area of the city I’ve never been.

4. Meeting friends — in real life!

One of the most exciting parts about Marine Corps Marathon weekend for me will be meeting friends I’ve made through blog-life and this marathon training cycle — IN THE FLESH! I’m participating in a shakeout run on Saturday morning before race day with a group I’ve been a part of for several months and I can’t wait to meet some of these folks face to face. Plus I’ll be reunited with one of my besties, Noemi, as well as my friend Suzanne and some others. I can’t wait!

5. The expo

I’m equal parts excited and loathing the expo. I can’t wait to see all the vendors and the craziness of a large race expo. But I also don’t want to have to waste hours and hours walking around inside when I could be outside walking the mall or going to museums or Ford’s theatre. So much to do, such little time!

Things to look forward to: @Marine_Marathon + #running + a visit to DC! #runchat

That’s a wrap on the official Friday Five linkup! Going forward I’ll continue to post Friday Fives because they’re really fun. I hope you’ll stick around and perhaps even join me.

Before I go — a huge shoutout to my friend Sara who’s taking on the Columbus marathon this weekend. Get it, girl!!

TALK TO ME!

Have you run MCM before? What’s one “must-see” or “must-do” over MCM weekend?

If you haven’t run MCM before, what’s your favorite big race?
