5 Phases of Racing Explained in Song

July 1, 2016

If you’ve run a race, you know there are different phases to racing. But did you know there are five distinct phases of running and racing that are easily categorized by song?  Use this handy list of songs to guide you through your next race.

5 Phases of Racing Explained in Song | Running on Happy

5 Phases of Racing Explained in Song

1. I can do anything!

The first phase of racing occurs before you even begin running. It’s the “I can do anything” phase.

(Mama Said Knock You Out, LL Cool J)

2. Let’s do this!

The second phase is at the beginning of the race when you feel damn near invincible. You’re still riding high from phase one. The children!!!!

(Greatest Love of All, Whitney Houston)

3. Believe!!

The third phase occurs at the mid-point of your race when things are challenging but still manageable.

(Believe, Lenny Kravitz)

4. I need a miracle.

Then there’s the dreaded fourth phase — when you’re almost to the finish line but not quite there yet. You’re laying it all out on the proverbial table but you can’t quit because this is when the real challenge begins. All YOU need is a miracle!

(All I Need is a Miracle, Mike + The Mechanics)

5. BOOM! Finish line.

And then there’s the fifth and final phase — when you cross the finish line and feel like a bad-ass with a capital BADASS.

(We Are The Champions, Queen)

As is clearly evidenced by this top notch list, races are easily segmented into five categories with corresponding music. A feast for the ears if you will.

And because it wouldn’t be the weekend without Olivia Newton John…
