Half Marathon Training: Week 10

April 19, 2016

It’s getting close to go-time. Four weeks left of spring training for me, and then I’m planning on a well deserved break. This training cycle has been good to me so far, but I’m getting a little burnt out and I want to nip it before it becomes a problem. My coach and I agreed that some time for fun running is definitely in order.

Last week I had a great week of running. Despite feeling tired, I’m strong and confident. I don’t have any PR plans for Cleveland but hoping for a course PR (which shouldn’t be too difficult unless I stop for photos every few miles).

Here’s how training went last week:

Half Marathon Training: Week 10

Tuesday – 6.03 miles

Tuesday was a mentally tough run. I can’t even be mad about it anymore because it’s in the 70s, but last week it was still 25˚ in the morning. I was absolutely not down with that. I was freezing and miserable for my entire run.

It was beautiful out, but I couldn’t get over being cold. It was totally not awesome. I’m so grateful it’s warm today.

Thursday – 8 miles

I skipped running on Wednesday due to the cold. I just couldn’t take it again. I opted for some long overdue strength training.

Which was never more obvious about how overdue it was until my run on Thursday. I woke up and my quads, groin, and glutes were on fire! And my pecs! Wow was I a hot mess.

My run went pretty well considering, but that was a wakeup call. I’m officially back on the strength training bandwagon.

Friday – 7.95 miles

I split Friday’s run in two. The first run was just over 4.5 miles. Second run was with my daughter in the stroller for just over 3 miles. Oddly enough, the stroller doesn’t really slow me down that much. I was surprised when I was looking at my splits because it feels like I’m pushing 2 tons on stroller runs.

We had fun, though, and afterward we hit the playground for some preschool fun.

Saturday – 12.2 miles

Saturday was fun. I ran through my neighborhood, my old school, and part of the course of the Race N Taste Trail 5K (which is coming up in June — if you haven’t registered yet, do so here!). I warmed up with a few miles solo then met up with David. We ran through our old campus and the trail, and managed to get 5 miles in! I was shocked. I was expecting maybe 2 miles at most.

I was thrilled with that mileage, though, because that meant I had less solo running to do through my neighborhood streets. I love my new ‘hood, don’t get me wrong, but since I run through my area during the week it’s nice to change the scenery on weekends with friends.

Around mile 10 I really had to pee. I was thinking I would stop at home and maybe see if the fam wanted to join me for the remaining 2 miles. But by the time I got home, I was spent. It was a pleasant run, no doubt, but I was just done. So I called it early. I took off my shoes (well, my husband took off my shoes for me) and sat my happy butt on the driveway. I didn’t get up for about a half an hour. It was nice to be done.

Sunday – 4.37 miles

Sunday morning was another great run! I met with my new 5K girls. They’re in week 3 now and they’re doing great! We added more running time this week and, despite being a little worried at the start, they did a phenomenal job with the new workout.

I added a little bootcamp for them at the end. While we were doing some of our squats my left quad started cramping up something fierce. It was intense. I’m sure I’ll be paying for that for a few more days. I’m hurting from it today, so I can only imagine how they’re feeling.

After 5K practice, I met up with Noemi for a few miles. It was a beautiful, warm day. Despite being exhausted, it was a great run.

I’ve been keeping up with my planking for the most part, but I’ve sadly missed the last few days. It’s been hard to want to plank after running 8+ miles each day. I’ll get back to it one of these days, I’m sure.

I’m looking forward to running this week. The temps will be much better for me, and I’m looking forward to running in the sunshine. I’ll probably take my daughter out for a few stroller runs again now that the weather’s nice. It’ll be a nice change of pace.
