Half Marathon Training: Week 2

February 23, 2016

Last week was my second official week of half marathon training. I’m so happy to be back at it. Of course I’m still worried about niggles and nagging injuries cropping up but overall I’m in a really great mental state. I didn’t hit all my mileage goals last week because I was running on the treadmill and I was seriously struggling mentally, but the miles I did put in felt great.

I’m officially seven weeks out from my first half of 2016 — the Hoosier Half in Bloomington, IN. If you’re still looking for a great spring race, check it out. Maybe we’ll see each other there!

Monday — yoga

Monday was a good day to stretch it out. I had a nice run with Noemi last Sunday and my legs definitely needed some TLC.

Tuesday — 3 miles + ITB rehab

I’m still working my tail off trying to nail down my cadence. I’m definitely improving. I can feel such a difference in my hips. It’s remarkable!

After my run I “cooled down” with my ITB rehab routine. And I say “cooled down” because if anything it made me sweat more. #winning

Wednesday — 3 miles + strength training

Wednesday was another treadmill run. Not too shabby but man do I struggle on the treadmill. I don’ t know how this happened because I used to run exclusively on the treadmill, but now I can hardly stand it! I was switching between using Spring and the metronome. Spring is a lot more fun. I know I’ve mentioned it a few times, but I’ll tell you more about it later this week. I think you’ll really like it. It’s a pretty awesome app for cadence training.

I finished up the morning with some strength training and I felt pretty rad despite the ongoing mental battle while I was running. (Should I stop? Just one more mile. Am I done yet? Gah, another two miles?!)

Thursday — 3 miles

3 more miles on the hamster wheel on Thursday. After Tuesday and Wednesday, I was kinda spent mentally so I kept this one short and sweet. I noticed on Thursday morning, however, the sun is up much earlier than it has been. It’s giving me hope! I can’t wait to run outside again!! Without all the layers. Without a headlamp. Without panicking about slipping on black ice. It will be glorious, I say!

Saturday — 8.25 miles

Saturday was an awesome day. On Friday we experienced the Big Thaw and literally everything melted. The weather was darn near perfect. The sunrise was just beautiful. I had to stop in the middle of the road to get a good shot.

We had a decent group turnout for our Saturday miles. Some old friends, some new. We had great conversation on the road, and it was a really fun run!

There were parts of the road that were really slick (hello, black ice!) which made me nervous, but as the sun came up and the temperatures rose, it was quite pleasant.

This week I plan on running outdoors as much as possible and really focusing on cadence. My follow-up appointment with my PT is on Friday. Wish me luck! And yes, I’m still planking! Day 42 at the time of writing. Boom!
