Injury Recovery: Bikes and Planks [+Giveaway!]

January 26, 2016
I feel like this giant weight has been lifted from my shoulders. Holy moly that was intense. After I battled all weekend long with the hosting/domain/new site fiasco, I lost email capability for about a day and a half. It’s ridiculous how reliant we become on technology, no? I finally figured it out after losing my marbles a few times throughout the day on Monday. I’m back in business and I feel much better. I was so beside myself I was worried this post wasn’t gonna happen! But now I can breathe a sigh of relief… phew!
As you know, I’m still injured. I haven’t been doing any running but I have been keeping up with my cardio via bike. I felt very antsy while on IR last time. This time is a little different. I ride, listen to my podcasts, do some yoga and body weight training, and that’s that. I haven’t been moping (yet) and I’ve been a little relieved that I haven’t had to run outside because it’s been cold. Have I told you I hate the cold? At least it hasn’t been Polar Vortex weather this year…

Here’s how last week went:
Tuesday — Bike + Strength Training
I rode for 30 minutes and then completed my strength training and IT band rehab routine, which took up another 30 minutes. I was pretty beat after this workout. Unfortunately I have no idea how to gauge my rides because I don’t have any way to track distance or anything like that. The video I did this time was a hill climb workout. Cadence topped out at 100 RPM at a 9 level effort. It was pretty tough. I definitely worked up a sweat.

Wednesday — Bike + Yoga
To mix things up, I did a fairly light effort ride compared to Tuesday. It was still a 45 minute workout, though. I added some yoga in the afternoon to work on flexibility.
Friday — Bike + Strength Training
My coach had planned a lactate threshold run for me on Friday — before injury. I really wish I could have done the run. By the time Friday rolled around, running looked like much more fun than sitting on the bike for an hour…

I’m also planking with a vengeance! You should join me if you haven’t already. Check out my posts on Instagram. No formal “challenge” or anything — just planking for a bit every day. It’s good for the core.

I planned on riding over the weekend for about an hour and a half but I caught a lovely cold from my fabulous husband and son, so unfortunately that didn’t happen. I’m looking forward to getting back in the groove this week, and then I may attempt a very short run over the weekend. Verdict’s still out on that, though. I do have to start training in earnest for my upcoming spring half marathons, though. Better heal up quickly and efficiently!

Speaking of spring half marathons… this week I’m the Ambassador of the Week for the Cleveland Marathon! I’m honored to be featured this week. As part of my fabulous ambassador duties, I get to host a giveaway! If you’re looking for a spring race, this is the race for you. You can enter to win a complimentary entry to any of the races of the Cleveland Marathon weekend. There’s a distance for everyone — 5K, 8K, 10K, Half and Full Marathons. Join me, won’t you?
