Training Recap: Running in a Winter Wonderland…

December 22, 2015
Last week was a down week. A much needed down week at that. After my 5K, I was tired for a few days. I still can’t believe how much that race took out of me. Totally worth it, though. I used the week to rest and recuperate.

Tuesday — 3.96 miles

Tuesday was supposed to be a 5-miler. Unfortunately I was up every two hours with my daughter who never sleeps when she has a cold… then I had to start when it was pitch black outside, which made for a “fun” run. And then I realized I was supposed to run 5 miles instead of 4… whomp whomp… I was full of excuses on Tuesday. It was embarrassing to email my coach how terribly I failed at my prescribed workout, but sh*t happens. Onward!

Bad run. Awesome shoes.

Wednesday — 4 miles

I refused to have a repeat of Tuesday’s hot mess, so I planned on waking up early and running on the treadmill. Gah!!! I must have stopped 4 times just because I couldn’t trudge on any longer! It was brutal! It definitely wasn’t pretty but at least I got the right mileage in this time.

Treadmill day!

Thursday — 5.04 miles

Another night up with my daughter made for a super fantastic early wake-up at 5:30 am (note dripping sarcasm). I met up with Julie, which was actually totally awesome so it made up for the lack of sleep the night before. Love running with that girl.

Just getting light at the end of our run…

We’re hoping to get some decent runs in while she’s on vacation this week! It’s been tough to get together lately because she leaves for work early. All of our runs together take place at o’dark thirty. Zzzzzz… It was dark when we started on Thursday but we saw a ton of people out. Guess that’s what happens when it’s “warm” in December. Good times!

Saturday — 6.04 miles

Saturday was a trip. On Friday night it had kinda, sorta snowed. Like, barely. When I got up and took my dog out at 7 am on Saturday morning, there was no snow. Not a speck. When my other friend Julie showed up at my house at 7:45, there was an inch of snow on the ground! Snow! I had every intention of running 9 miles that morning. Julie was supposed to be running 5.

Just before heading out.

We headed out, it was slick and the snow kept coming. It was relentless. It made for some fun conversation, and running in the snow always makes one feel more badass anyway, so it wasn’t a total flop of a run. But I decided I wasn’t going to continue the run after she split off. Because for the very same reason of feeling badass in the snow with a friend, running in a blizzard solo just seems crazy. #Amiright?

Lashicles!

We split the difference and ran 6 miles together. It was her longest run to date with me as her coach. I felt like a proud mama. Overall it was a super fun morning run together. And I somehow wore the appropriate amount of apparel again. I’m getting kinda good at this!

Why is there so much snow?!

Oh, also? The snow is completely gone again. Go figure!

This week it’s about maintenance. My first half marathon of the 2016 season is in April, which means training will start soon! I’m enjoying the time to chill and relax, but I’m also looking forward to the 2016 racing season. My calendar is filling up quickly!

What’s your first race of 2016?
Will it be a white Christmas where you are?
