Bridge2Bridge: My Decision to DNS [and a Fresh Perspective]

October 22, 2015
It’s that time. The time when I have to make the decision whether
or not I can run my next race, which just so happens to be in two days.
Bridge2Bridge Half Marathon was to be my third half marathon of the season.
I
was really looking forward to this particular race for many reasons, one of
them being that I was going to get to race with two good friends that I haven’t
run with in some time. If you’ve been following along, however, you know that I
haven’t been running at all since the Northern Ohio Half Marathon on October 4th,
and I really have no exact timeline of when I will be able to run again.
So it is with heavy heart that I officially announce that I
will DNS my next race.
But there is a bright side, my friends! I’ve been given the
green light to cycle my way through the half marathon. I’m looking forward to
this opportunity very much. Not only will it allow me to still participate in
the race, albeit in a much different way than originally intended and not as
an official participant either, but it will also give me a distinct vantage
point to document the race from an entirely different point of view. I’ll be
able to see my friends and hopefully catch some good photos of them on course.
And I’ll be able to experience the Bridge2Bridge atmosphere, both pre- and post-race.
It should make for an enjoyable morning!

Admittedly I’m a little intimidated to cycle my way through
Ashtabula, Ohio. One of my fears of cycling on the road is the possibility of
being hit by a car. Interestingly enough, I was never one for running outside
for similar fears (not the car-hitting, more so being in an uncontrolled
environment). I ran for years solely on my treadmill, never once venturing
outside. My current situation is not so different from that. I currently cycle
only indoors. I’m nervous about cars. Or getting lost. Or not being able to
make it up that steep hill over there! But I have a feeling once I’m out on the road and see how much different better it is, I’ll probably develop a new love for cycling. One can only hope…
Maybe this will be me one day. Ha!
I’m looking forward to Bridge2Bridge with a much different perspective now. It will definitely be different. But I’m grateful I’m allowed to participate on bike, and I’m thankful I can even ride a bike given my current condition.
If you’re available October 24 and looking for a fun race, you should join the fun — as a runner or a spectator! I’ll be there cheering on my friends with bells on and enjoying the race atmosphere. Come on out!

Any words of widsom for navigating a running race on bike? What are some tips for getting ahead of your friends for photo opps?
