Good day, my peeps! I have been tremendously busy the last few days, and I honestly couldn’t remember much of what happened with my training last week. Thankfully my coach has me reporting back to him (in detail) so I was able to look back at my week. It turns out my week wasn’t that great.
Monday — 1.75 miles
I normally don’t run on Mondays. Last week I did, however, because it was a holiday weekend and it was the only time I could meet with my 5K athletes. I ran/walked almost 2 miles, but I didn’t start my Garmin until we were about 5 minutes in, so I’m going with 1.75 miles on Monday.
Tuesday — 5 miles
Track Tuesday with gal pal, Noemi! 4×800 this time around. I felt pretty damn good, I must say. It was a tough, solid workout, but I was never tired to the point of not being able to complete a rep, and I definitely could have added more. Not that I wanted to… but I could have… This was also the day that inspired this post on track etiquette.
Wednesday — 6 miles
Wednesday was excruciating. It was hot as cheeseballs, the humidity was in the 80s — the 80s!! — and I was experiencing GI distress from the get-go. The goal of Wednesday’s run was steady state. Unfortunately about halfway through my run I realized why I haven’t been hitting my tempo and steady state goals — there are too many hills! The overall elevation doesn’t change a whole lot but when I looked at my elevation chart from my route on Wednesday, it was all over the place.
I did manage even splits, which was awesome even if it wasn’t exactly to plan. And I saw a very small rainbow over someone’s house. That was a nice little surprise!
Thursday — 7.75 miles
I was supposed to run 8 miles. I ended up at 7.75. I’m okay with that. Not much to note from Thursday’s run except that the temp and humidity was much more manageable. Oh, I also wore a new reflective vest! Unfortunately it didn’t fit so well so I’ll need to return it. In the meantime, I bought a better fitting one on Amazon. Yay! Safety first!
Friday — 0
My coach added a day of running for me. I decided I needed a rest day, though. If I didn’t take a rest day, I would have been running for 7 days straight. I know there are the folks that can easily accomplish the running streaks, even if it is only a mile or so, but I’m a firm believer in taking complete days of rest. Our bodies need time to recharge, reboot, and build up again so they’re stronger and better prepared for the next push ahead.
Saturday — 9 miles
Oh, Saturday… Saturday was interesting. I woke up early, ready to run. I had a short window of opportunity as my husband had an event for work that started early and he had to leave the house by 8:15 am to get there on time.
I got all my gear on, including my newer reflective vest, and headed out. It was pretty brisk — as compared to Wednesday, for sure. It was spitting rain at me which concerned me as heavy rains were predicted for the weekend.
Human glowstick! |
As I turned out of my development, I saw my neighbor and waved across the normally-busy road. (There were no cars! These fools don’t wake up at the butt crack of dawn like us crazy runners do…) I started down my usual route, but something spooked me. I don’t even know what, to be perfectly honest. But no one, and I mean no one, else was out so I was pretty nervous.
It was not this light out on Saturday morning! |
If a tree falls in the woods and no one’s around to hear, does it make a noise?
So ridiculous. But whatevs. It happened.
I ran out of that development and headed toward the next one only to be trapped by deer! DEER! Stupid large, scary, horse-like, dog-like creatures. Deer. The deer out here are much more anxious around people as compared to my old ‘hood where they would stand literally feet from you and just watch you walk (or run) on by. These deer gave me the firm stare down. I was not messing with them.
At this point I now had shaved off a couple miles off my route, I was annoyed, my head was 100% not in the game, and I was quickly running out of time. Oh, and it was still spitting cold rain. I threw my arms up and said,”F’ it. I’m going home.” So home I went.
Dejected. Rejected. Totally bummed out. |
My husband was mighty confused when I came back in after being out for only three miles, but I told him the story and said I would continue with the remaining 6 miles when he returned in the afternoon.
There were a few breaks in the clouds while my husband was gone. As soon as he got home, I laced up and hit the road. This time with much less gear but added arm sleeves for warmth. My 6-mile afternoon run was much, and I mean much, better than the morning’s run. I felt good, I had a nice pace, and I was in great spirits. It started spitting toward the end of my route but no big deal. I finished all 6 miles and felt like I redeemed myself from earlier. And as luck would have it, as soon as I got under the safety of my front porch the skies opened up and down-poured for the rest of the afternoon, evening, and the next day. Whoop!! Lucky duck.
Redemption!! |
This week I’ll be doing some pace work. Should be fun. I’m looking forward to it, and hopefully the cooler temps will keep me grounded. 🙂 I just hope it’s nothing like last week! Home stretch of training, folks!
