Happy Tuesday, friends. I’m now officially back into half marathon training mode. Right after I finished the Rock Hall half, I was up in the air if I was mentally (or physically) ready for another half marathon challenge. But after taking a laissez-fare approach to training over the last two weeks, I’ve realized I’ve been able to keep it up without becoming too exhausted or fatigued, so now I’m back on board 100%. My next race is the Northern Ohio Half Marathon on October 4. I’m really looking forward to it.
Here’s how last week’s training went:
Tuesday — 5.5 miles
Tuesday was supposed to be track day, but I switched it up and did my steady state run instead. Plan called for 6 miles. I made it 5.5. I didn’t beat myself up too much over that. A half mile here and there isn’t a big deal. Plus I’m still learning my roads around here, so it’s taking a bit of trial and error to get just the right mileage without having to run in front of my house 50 times. 🙂
Wednesday — 5.22 miles
Wednesday was cruise interval day at the track. I felt pretty good but it was definitely a tough effort. Plan called for 6 miles again. I opted not to do the last mile interval. I was short on time and I was a little down about it, but I knew I had to get home to my kids before Boo got on the bus for school, so there wasn’t much I could do about it anyhow. Overall it was a great run so I didn’t let it get me down too much. Plus, like I said, laissez-fare.
Thursday — 6 miles
Thursday was easy run day. In runner’s speak, that means you just run. Not for speed or time. But just running for the sake of running. A stress-reliever, if you will. It was a nice run. A little steamy, but otherwise great.
Saturday — 11.54 miles
Saturday’s plan was for 12 miles. Noemi was going to come over and run the first 6 and then I would be tackling 6 solo. Unfortunately I mapped us a faulty route because one of the side streets we were supposed to run down turned out to be a private drive (oops), so we detoured. We ended up running further together than originally planned, which worked out nicely for me because then I didn’t have to run alone as long. Unfortunately that also came to bite me because instead of going all the way to my starting point for my second 6-miler, I cut it short (thinking I had made up mileage earlier) and I ended up shorting myself almost a half mile.
The good news is that I felt great for almost the entire run. Noemi and I ran at a nice, even pace. Plenty of chatting and enjoying the new views. Plus, this never gets old…
I love running! And sunrises! #winning |
When Noemi’s 6 were over, we ran back to my house where she departed for home and I chugged water and scarfed down a bag of PROBAR Bolt. For my second half, I saw tons of people outside walking their dogs and bumped into my new neighbor (a fellow runner). We stopped to chat for a few minutes, but then parted ways as she had family coming over and I still had 2 miles to run.
When I got back home and realized I would be short a little bit of distance, I ran to the end of my street and back. By that point in the morning (it was now 9 am), the sun was rising and it was becoming almost unbearable to run without water. I decided to call it a day. Again, I was almost a half mile short, but such is life. No worries, right?

Last week was a learning experience — mostly in terms of my routes and distance covered. I’ll be sure to study the map a little more closely for my next neighborhood run, because all this shorting mileage is going to start adding up rather quickly! This week I’ll be tackling some major mileage so hopefully I get these routes figured out pretty quickly. Fingers crossed I can hit all my goals!
