Practice Makes Perfect: Getting Ready for the 20-Mile Drop

March 26, 2015
As noted previously, I’m more than halfway through marathon training. I can’t believe it. Time (and miles) has flown by. In 3 Sundays, I’ll be “racing” the 20-Mile Drop. (You can read more about the 20-Mile Drop here.)

Although I’m mentally going into the race as another training run, it will be good for me on many levels.

One, it will help shake out some pre-race jitters. I plan on going into the marathon confident and happy, just like I have all of my other previous training runs. The 20-Mile Drop will help confirm that I can look past the race atmosphere and focus on myself and my running partners.

Two, it will be a nice dress rehearsal for the marathon, which will be one month from this race. I’ll be able to try out pre-race meals, race day fuel and hydration, as well as post-race care — basically all my running rituals. I’m also looking forward to trying out what I’m going to wear, how to layer appropriately (if needed), and bib placement.

Three, and this is a biggie, I will keep my race mentality in check. There’s nothing worse than going out too fast — as many runner can attest — and although I’m confident this won’t happen to me, it’s always good to have a practice race in preparation for the big dance.
I know these points may seem mundane and trivial, but in a 20+ mile run, some of these can make or break you. If you don’t fuel efficiently and stay hydrated, if you wear the wrong shirt or run faster than a pace you’ve practiced time and again, it can be a recipe for disaster. The goal of the 20-Mile Drop, for me, is to practice, practice, practice.

Plus, pancakes.

If you haven’t registered for the 20-Mile Drop yet, and you’re looking for a great race in Northeast Ohio, click here to be taken to the registration form. Be sure to use code HappyRunning to save $5 on registration.

Look for my race recap in a couple weeks. It should be a fun time. It’s a point-to-point race, which I’m really looking forward to. I enjoy my out-and-backs, but this will be a nice change. I’m going in with a clear mind, a relaxed spirit, and plan on making it a fun training run with a few thousand of my closest friends.

Have a great day, lovelies!

Do YOU have pre-race rituals? What are some of the things you do?
