Marathon Training Recap: Week 2

January 27, 2015
Week 2 of marathon training went well. I’m undecided if I’m having fun at this point. One day I love running, the next day I’m regretting registering for a full. I can’t seem to get my head in the game 100%. I blame winter.
Last week was an “easy” 3-5-3 again, with a 9 mile long run on Saturday. For whatever reason, the midweek 5 miles has been really tough for me. I feel great on Tuesday, then Wednesday comes and by the time Thursday rolls around, I’m completely dragging my feet on the treadmill just to get it done.
The 9 mile run was really fun, though. It was a big improvement over last week. This time I ran at a much slower pace and was more consistent throughout the run. There were four of us who started out together, and we all took turns running solo for a little bit. I could tell when I would push my pace just how much I needed to slow it down. Thankfully I ran with a pal from high school I recently reconnected with who turns out to be around my pace. Score!
The weather was brisk and the paved multipurpose trails were plowed but still slippery. There were sporadic patches of bare asphalt but for the most part we were running on slick packed snow or ice. Toward the end of our route there was a decent downhill portion and I ran a little bit in the vegetation so I could gain some traction.
Trying to capture a ridiculous ice-fall behind us. Didn’t work, but we got a cute selfie!
My friend Julie picked me up and I stupidly brought my Yaktrax but didn’t wear them for this run, and left them in her car. I’m still kicking myself for that one. Rookie mistake.
Post-run, we regaled each other with colorful tales of the food we were all fantasizing about while out on the road. Turns out we were all really hungry! Three of us ventured out to breakfast, and were greeted by a super friendly waitress with a “Hi ladies! How was your run?” Guess being so close to the park they must see a lot of hungry, sweaty runners.
Breakfast selfie!
Noemi and Julie!

I ordered this awesome breakfast sandwich. And a banana. Gotta have my banana. Plus coffee. Mmmm coffee. So nice and warm after a freezing cold run. Have I mentioned how much I despise being cold? Brrrr!!
Breakfast. Sandwich. Yes.

We had great fun during our run and at breakfast. The rest of the weekend was very low key with the family. Boo played outside, Little Bee napped and then watched Boo play outside. Good times.
Boo’s “snowman.” So cute!

Love.
I finished off the weekend with some much-needed yoga. Turns out my Achilles was tight and a bit sore. I stretched it out and all is well again. It will be interesting to see what other aches and pains I endure during this training cycle. Hopefully none!!
This week is my stepback week. I’m looking at another 3-5-3 set, with a shorter long run on Saturday. Hopefully the weather will warm up a bit and I won’t be stuck on my treadmill this weekend, but it’s not looking too promising. Fingers crossed anyway. 🙂
All in all, week 2 was a success and in the books. Now to week 3. Annnnd… GO!
Hope you have a great Tuesday!
xo
