Running-Life Balance: Erica

May 16, 2014
I gotta tell ya, folks. I’m FREAKING OUT. Two days until my first half marathon.
I didn’t think I would be, and I truly have no reason to be, but I can’t help it. Ack!!! I kind of feel like Chandler…
Or Garth… “I’m having a good time. …Not.”
Anyways… Today’s post is about the amazing life of Erica at Erica Finds. Think I’m nervous? I’m not after reading her running-life balance post. She is a seasoned marathoner and puts all of my fears to rest. This amazing woman has run over 100 half marathons! Read on for her inspiring story.

What are you training for (if anything)?
I am always “sort of” training. My next marathon is New York in November. It will be my 15th NYC marathon, so I will have guaranteed entry for life! I love to run half marathons and my next one is coming up in June. I am toying with the idea of running an ultra. Last year, I did back to back half marathons in one weekend (race recap) and ran up Mt. Washington in the Mt. Washington Road Race (race recap) as my stretch goals. This year, I have not come up with anything too crazy!

How do you balance your training with family time? With work?
Well, we don’t have any children or nearby immediate family, so I only have to balance my races and travel and mileage with my husband’s schedule. He has a hobby that keeps him busy on weekends, car racing, so we don’t have too many issues. I also like to run and workout very early in the morning and he gets up for work early, so we are good that way. I schedule fitness “dates” with friends and share a pilates instructor with a good friend as a weekly meet up, too. This way, we keep in touch and in shape!

As far as work, I have been working part time and blogging this year, because the new full time opportunity I was planning to take in January fell through. I did Consulting and traveled for work for many years. I always found that mornings worked best for me and I learned that some exercise is better than no exercise. Runners can be “Type A” and want to follow a plan to a letter and I am no exception. That said, I used to think if I didn’t have time to do the “full” workout that I could not fulfill the plan, so I did nothing.

I have learned a few things about balance since I started working almost twenty years ago. Namely, that something is better than nothing and no one is perfect. To stay in shape, I incorporated some very short workouts when needed and sometimes did a little before work and a little after. I also convinced many colleagues to run with me or to have walking meetings just to get something in. Running can be a common bond and I developed some great professional working relationships by running with clients and colleagues on business trips.

Who is your biggest supporter?

I lived in NYC for many years and then moved to Chicago in 2006. I am still close with my NY running club teammates and have a great network of club teammates and running friends here in Chicago. I have so much support for my running from these friends. My husband, our families and my friends have always cheered me on, as well. Some of them don’t quite “get” it but they are proud of me nonetheless!

Erica lives and runs in Chicago and blogs at Erica Finds. She is more of a blogging runner than running blogger, but writes on health, fitness, running, travel, deals and ideas – anything that she finds that could be of interest! She has run 37 marathons, over 100 half marathons and many more races and is grateful for every run!
