Running-Life Balance: Eugenia

March 7, 2014
Starting today, I will be doing something a little special for my blog. Each Friday I will be featuring a guest blogger — awesome folks who are contributing to a discussion on running-life balance. I’m really excited to read what some of my friends and guest bloggers have to say on the topic. I am constantly trying to find a nice balance between the two, and I will also be posting on the topic at a later date. It will be refreshing and interesting to read how others juggle training and life — whether it be family time, work, or other community obligations.
I asked my guests three questions:

  1. What are you training for (if anything)?
  2. How do you balance your training with family time? With work?
  3. Who is your biggest supporter?

Today I will kick off the conversation with a post from my good friend and running buddy, Eugenia. I met Eugenia not too long ago at the 2013 Cleveland Turkey Trot. I am very thankful I met her. Eugenia is an amazingly beautiful person. She is happy, outgoing, real, and an all around awesome person to know.
A note about the guest posts you will see here: the posts you will read throughout this series do not necessarily reflect any of my own opinions or ideas. These posts are directly from the writers themselves.
Here’s Eugenia!

My name is Eugenia. I am 29 years old, originally from Costa
Rica but currently living in Cleveland, Ohio. I am married to a wonderful man
and I became a mother to a beautiful little girl last year. I started running
in November of 2013 and I haven’t stopped since. I have completed a 5 mile
race, a 10K and I will be running a 10 mile race in March.
What are you training for (if anything)?
Right now I am training for
my upcoming 10-mile race. I am also running the Color Run race and I have in
mind to run a half marathon in May but I haven’t committed 100% yet.
I don’t really follow
anyone’s training plan because it makes me feel like I have to run, instead of
me just going for a run. I just run and that’s how I prepare for my races. I am
sure that later on I will learn how to follow a plan because I really don’t
want to get injured, but for now I feel like I can keep running freewill.
How do you balance your training with family time? With work?
I am a nurse, a mom, a wife
and just recently started my masters program so I am relatively busy and always
tired. And no leaving aside the fact that I am also a runner — a fairly new
runner — and on top of it I became a part of challenge group to run 1,000
miles this year. I am constantly running now — I breathe, talk and eat running,
and I love it.
To be honest, before I
began running, balancing my life was tougher than it is now. I found out that
the missing ingredient for balancing my life was running. Before running, I was
an emotional mess. I was always insecure about everything — my husband, my
friends, my life, my body. It was tough to be mentally and emotionally
balanced. I believe now that I was on the border of depression and I wasn’t
able to recognize it until I started running. So I could say now that running
is saving my life because it is a work in progress.
Who is your biggest supporter?
My biggest supporter is and has always been my husband. He has
been behind all my plans and ideas even if I stopped and gave up halfway. Now
that I started running he made me promise him I was not going to give up
running, so I won’t. Now if I get cranky his advice is, “why don’t you go for a
run?” and I don’t get offended because I know that I will be a completely
different person when I come back from my run.  So I just run for my family and for me!
