What do yoga, running, and children have in common?

February 18, 2014
I have so many conflicting stories going on in my head today. I’ve found it extremely difficult to focus on any one topic. I thought I had one or two ideas for my blog this morning but so much has happened since then that I don’t think either of those ideas will work for me anymore. Today I’m just going to focus on my training. Might be kind of a boring post, but it will be cathartic for me to go over the past couple of weeks.
I’ve been following a training plan and sticking to it pretty well. This morning was my cross training morning. To be perfectly honest, I don’t particularly like cross training days. For the same reason that I don’t like group aerobic classes (Step, Tae Bo, Zumba, etc), I feel uncoordinated and confused most of the time. Of course my cross training of choice happens to be yoga. The only reason I choose yoga over anything else is that I can do it at home while my daughter naps. Any other type of cross training and I would likely need to be at a gym.
Yoga is supposed to be soothing, freeing, and grounding. But I end up all discombobulated and twisted around, and not in the ways that I should be twisting. I think I have to keep doing these yoga classes over and over so I finally figure out the flow. It’s hard to keep up with an online instructor, and bend your neck every which way to see the screen, when you’re supposed to be focused and strong. Anyways, enough about yoga.
My running has been great, for the most part. I’ve been training steadily so as not to overdo it. I think I’m doing a good job. I’m a little worried because I haven’t run outside since the first weekend in December for the Christmas Story Run 5k/10k. I have a little over a month until race day. I’m really hoping I can run outside at least two or three times before then, but given how this winter has been going, I won’t hold my breath. I don’t think I would be worried at all except that I’ve heard from several other runners that this course is pretty hilly.
Other than that, my 800s have been going well. I skipped my first tempo run because of minor toe discomfort, but I’m scheduled for one this week. I am oddly looking forward to it. I have an eight miler coming up this weekend as well. I just did seven on Sunday and it was a hot mess, but I finished. It was a chaotic and distracted run, that’s for sure. Hopefully my long run this weekend won’t be anything like that one! I need to focus, people.
In other news, my kids have been giving me a run for my money! This snow is just driving us bananas. Poor Boo has been stuck inside for months now, and he’s got so much energy to burn and no place to burn it. Yesterday we attempted a trip to the Natural History Museum. Total disaster. It was President’s Day and we didn’t get there right when it opened. Rookie mistake. We literally drove around for 20 minutes looking for a parking place when I threw my hands up in the air and said, “mall?” So to the mall we went! We ended up having a good time so it wasn’t a total loss. More annoying than anything.
Little Bee has been sitting up on her own for a while now, but has recently figured out how to go from sitting to all fours, back to a sitting position. She kind of scoots around but isn’t quite crawling yet. Very fun. She is also cutting three teeth. Oh. My. Gosh. She doesn’t seem to be in too much discomfort so I don’t want to dose her if it’s unnecessary, but it can’t feel good, right? Once these three pop through she will have five teeth total.
Off to enjoy the afternoon with my offspring. I’m sure I’ll post another training recap in a week or so. Have a great day!

Are you training for anything? How is it going?
Do you have any offspring? What fun things are they doing to keep your life entertaining?
