Behind the Scenes of a Fitness Video with STACK
Back in September I was given the opportunity to test out a new piece of fitness technology — the Polar M200 watch. I’ve been giddy with excitement to blog about the experience ever since, but since the watch hadn’t hit the market yet, it was all very hush-hush for several weeks. When I was first contacted by STACK.com to do an on-camera interview, I have to admit, my brow started perspiring and my heart rate rose a couple notches. I was very nervous.
A) I had never been on camera before.
B) The Polar M200 was a quite a bit different than the technology I was used to.
C) Video?! See A above.
The M200 was a nice gadget to play with and while I didn’t get to keep it, I did get to work with an amazing crew of people for the video interview. I’ll tell you a little bit about the M200 at a later date, but today I’d like to focus on the experience of the interview process. It was a lot of fun and I feel it’s a rarity to learn about behind-the-scenes of some popular fitness videos on the web.
Calm the nerves
I met with my contact at STACK.com, Scott, and the video crew at one of my favorite running locales. We had an in-depth personal interview — I was asked all about my running background, how I got into coaching, my coaching style, and even about my upcoming races and goals — and of course, we discussed the watch as well (more on that next week). After the interview portion came the really fun and easy part — the running. The crew set up cameras at different vantage points, I would run to whatever point they wanted me to go, and then we would move locations. My favorite part, and perhaps the most intimidating part of the running segment, was when Scott got out the drone.
Running’s the easy part!
Scott told me to start running and I could hear the whir of the rotors following me. It was simultaneously cool and creepy — talk about Big Brother, I was definitely being watched by a little something flying in the sky!
We caused quite a stir at the park. Many runners and walkers stopped to make sure they weren’t in our way. A couple glanced over several times trying to determine if I was someone famous. It was a really fun experience and I’m grateful that I was given the opportunity to work with STACK.com. None of this would have been possible had it not been for my affiliation with the Cleveland Marathon. To the leaders there, I am very thankful. Working with STACK.com on this project was great fun and I look forward to working with them again in the future.
