I can’t believe it’s almost October. October brings so many awesome things — Marine Corps Marathon, apple picking deliciousness, and my dad coming to visit. Plus October brings the If Girls Ran the World takeover!
If you’re a new reader or if you’ve forgotten what If Girls Ran the World is all about, you can read more about it here.
Today I wanted to take this opportunity to give you a recap of my fundraising efforts as well as tell you my plan for logging all the miles in October! (Plus three ways you can get involved, too.)
October Marathon Miles for a Good Cause: Girls Inc.
Girls, Inc.
The organization I’m fundraising for is called Girls Inc. Girls Inc. is important to me because at its core, the organization is there to encourage girls (and women) to be strong, smart, and bold — all things that can be lacking in any environment and circumstance but shouldn’t be. Every girl deserves not only to feel but to also be empowered — and Girls Inc. makes it their business to make that happen for more than 140,000 girls across the U.S. and Canada.
Fundraising
My fundraising goal for the If Girls Ran the World campaign, to be given directly to Girls Inc., is $250. It’s an achievable amount, to be fair. So far I’ve raised $38. It’s not a lot but I’m currently thinking of ways that I can raise some more money. One of my friends suggested that I buy some fundraiser wristbands from a website like www.sleekwristbands.com but I haven’t ordered anything yet. The wristbands are a great way for me to raise some cash and they also help promote the cause too. Of course, there are many other options to raise funds, too. Reaching out to a company like Tatango for help via their text message marketing services could be one of them. Apparently this is a tried and tested method for many fundraising campaigns, but I’m not sure if the funds I require are of that large a magnitude. Maybe I could give it a shot. Also, I haven’t put forth a ton of effort into fundraising since I’m in the throes of marathon training but I do want to change that. Looking at last years nonprofit annual report does spur me on though, to really work at raising the most money that I possibly can and top what was achieved last time. It’s got to get better every year to really make it all seem worth while. Which leads me to the next order of business…
October’s Mileage Plan
I haven’t nailed down an exact mileage goal as of yet, but I’ll be logging every single one of my marathon training miles for If Girls Ran the World. You can log your mileage, too! How? Easy! Join my team! On Team No Excuses Running you can log your mileage (and donations). Together we can make an amazing impact in some of these young ladies’ lives.
International Day of the Girl
There’s another way to get involved — the Role Models for If Girls Ran the World are hosting a group run on October 11th.
October 11th is the International Day of the Girl. This is a day that celebrates girls around the world. With a mission “to help galvanize worldwide enthusiasm for goals to better girls‘ lives, providing an opportunity for them to show leadership and reach their full potential.” It’s a day when groups come together under the same goal to highlight, discuss, and take action to advance rights and opportunities for girls everywhere.
How can you get involved on International Day of the Girl? Contact your local Role Model and ask her about a group run scheduled for October 11th. Group runs are the best and group runs for a great cause are even better.
I’m extremely honored I’m able to participate in such a phenomenal movement. Empowering girls and young women has been important to me since I myself was a little girl — I’m just glad I’m seeing it to fruition. Join me!
So how can you get involved? Simple:
- Donate to my fundraising page.
- Join Team No Excuses Running — you’ll get to fundraise and log your miles!
- Join me for a group run on October 11th. Details will be coming soon.
