It’s true — I talk about nutrition a lot. Like here, here, and here. What can I say? It’s an important topic! One of the more recent times I’ve gotten into nutrition was in my discussion of Bob’s Red Mill protein powders. I actually promised you a recipe in that post. Lucky you because today is that day, my friends. Today as part of the Running Coaches’ Corner linkup, I present to you a recipe for energy balls.
A note about marathon fuel: if you’re new to the marathon (and half marathon) dance, it’s all about you. There’s no one-size-fits-all when it comes to fueling. What works well for one person will have disastrous consequences for the next. Make it your business to try different fuels during your training cycle. You’ll be glad you did.
Before you continue on, check out my post about Bob’s Red Mill protein powders and why they’re awesome.
These are no ordinary energy balls. In fact, they’ll become my go-to fuel for my long runs during this marathon training cycle. They’re gluten-free, sugar-free, and dairy-free, which is phenomenal for my sensitivities — and probably for some of yours, too. Check it out:
Protein & Fiber Energy Balls
Gluten-Free, Sugar-Free, Dairy-free
Ingredients
- 1/2 C almonds, processed
- 3 Tbsp Bob’s Red Mill Protein & Fiber Nutritional Booster
- 1/4 C ground flaxseeds
- 2-3 Tbsp honey
- 1-2 Tbsp maple syrup
- 1/4 C raisins
Directions
Combine all ingredients in a large bowl and mix well. Cover and refrigerate for 30-40 minutes. Remove from the refrigerator and shape into 1″ balls. Store energy balls in an airtight container in the refrigerator. Keeps well up to two weeks.
If you plan on taking these out with you on the trail or the road, cut cling wrap into 4″ squares and wrap balls individually. Easy snack to grab and go!
I think you’ll really love these energy balls. The best part is they pack a nutritional punch. They’re easy to eat, easy to digest, and fun to make.
