As predicted last week, week 3 of marathon training was kind of a bust. I tried to keep up with my workouts as best I could but if I’m being honest, I didn’t try that hard. Turns out juggling training, coaching, blogging, and mom-ing is tough. It’s a balancing act. I needed time to step back, unplug, and recharge. Vacation was the perfect opportunity to unplug and enjoy life with my family. So I did — and I loved every minute of it! Unfortunately that means my training suffered a bit. It was a fantastic week with my family — just not such a great week in terms of running.
Marine Corps Marathon Training: Week 3
Tuesday — 2 miles
On Tuesday my little dude and I went out for our second beach run. Since I neglected to take my phone with us on our first run, I made sure I brought it on our second one. This run was a little less intense than our first one together since we pushed his limits on Sunday’s run, but it was still fantastic nonetheless.
We ran in our little neighborhood near the beach and then ended at the beach to collect shells and take some photos.
I love running with this little bugger. I can’t wait for him to be able to run longer distances so we can run together more often!
Thursday — 1.75 miles
On Thursday morning I asked my son if he wanted to go running. He enthusiastically said yes, which was a bit surprising. My daughter overheard and decided she wanted to go running, too. And we couldn’t go without my husband, so all four of us headed out for a family fun run.
We didn’t make it very far with all four of us, though, so after my husband and daughter had enough, my son and I finished up our run with a trip to the bagel shop down the road. We ran back home with bags of bagels, cinnamon rolls, and tasty muffins. Delish!
Saturday — 11 miles
We spent all of Friday in the car. I was half eager for and half dreading my scheduled long run for Saturday. Since I slacked big time during the week, I had a feeling I wouldn’t make my planned 14 miles. Since I was so exhausted from the trip the previous day, I decided I would aim for 12 miles and be happy if I finished 10. I really didn’t want to beat myself up over missing miles.
The first several miles went really well. At first I was grumpy because I really didn’t want to be running but once I settled in, the miles began to fly by. When I was nearing mile 10, I decided I would continue on to see how far I could go. This would come back to bite me in the ass.
By 10.25 miles, I was spent. My feet were hurting, my hip was hurting, and my knee was hurting. I headed home but had to adjust my gait because I was starting to feel some IT band issues cropping up. And adjusting my gait was a terrible idea. Another thing to bite me later on.
I made it 11 miles when all was said and done, but because I adjusted my gait, the back of my right knee was in a lot of pain for the rest of Saturday and most of Sunday.
Sunday — 3.28 miles
I knew rest would have been the way to go on Sunday but I needed to meet up with my C25K group. We hadn’t met face to face in a few weeks and since we’re closing in on race day, it’s important that we get together as much as we can beforehand.
I taped up the back of my knee (as best I could without someone doing it for me) and headed out to meet my crew. As soon as we started running I could feel myself limping. I was in bad shape. I was a little concerned I wouldn’t be able to finish the scheduled run but I pressed on. The first two reps were a struggle, but by the last rep I was feeling much better. The bootcamp exercises at the end seemed to help a bit as well.
Last week was a bust any way you look at it. But I’m done messing around. I have one more trip coming up but I’m planning to run long before I leave town. Aside from that, I’m staying put and putting 110% effort into my training schedule.
