What a week! Last week was my last goof around weekend before marathon training. And goof around I did not! I was busy, active, and now trying to catch up on all the missed sleep.
Race N Taste and Bittersweet Miles
Tuesday – 5.35 miles
Despite running decent splits, I felt sluggish on Tuesday. I attributed it to poor diet choices and lack of sleep, but who knows why I felt slow and lumpy. Some days we just have blah runs. Tuesday was one of those days.
Thursday – 4.05 miles + Race N Taste bag stuffing
I was technically supposed to run hills on Thursday, but instead of hills I opted to run a little faster. It was fun. Who doesn’t like running fast?
On Thursday evening I met with the other Race N Taste committee members for our final meeting before Race N Taste. We stuffed race bags and made last minute race day decisions. It’s always a good time getting together with that crew. We were all looking forward to race day!
Friday – 6 miles
Friday was another bad run. I’m not sure what happened last week. My right leg was really bothering me for the first two miles. I planned on running 4 miles if it continued hurting (basically back home) but lo and behold, something must have shifted and my leg didn’t hurt as much. I finished up my planned 6 and then rolled several times on Friday.
Saturday – Race N Taste Trail 5K
Finally, Race N Taste day! I arrived at Hiram House Camp to start setting up and getting everything together for the race. I saw my buddies from Greater Cleveland XC, configured race registration and packet pickup, and helped out where help was needed. The weather was perfect – maybe a touch warm – but the sun was shining and everyone was in good spirits.
I met my Instagram giveaway winner, Will, in person finally. After all this time following each other on Instagram and Facebook it was nice to put a face, voice, and name together! He took first in his age group, too. Nice work, Will!
It was a long day but definitely worth it. We had a nice turnout of runners, the tasting partners were fantastic, and I’ve decided I definitely need a Vitamix in my life.
Sunday – 7.28 miles
Sunday was nothing but bittersweet miles. It was my last long run with my girl, Noemi – at least until Marine Corps Marathon in October. If you’re a regular reader, you know Noemi is one of my closest friends. She shares recipes on my blog, we ran the Cleveland Marathon together last year, she’s been in my playgroup and our kids have grown to be good friends (when my son said goodbye to her daughter on Sunday I just about lost it). She’s one of my favorite people in the world and I’m going to miss her so much.
As a celebratory last long run, David, Noemi, and I hit the trails of the Cleveland Metroparks for a few leisurely, bittersweet miles. We were technically supposed to run 22 miles (no, just kidding) but we topped out at just around 7.25 miles.
We had a nice run together – well documented by all the selfies, to be sure. It was definitely one of the sadder runs I’ve had in a while. Noemi, you will be missed!
This week I am officially in marathon training mode. That means no more screwing around. I took a month off to run and have fun, and that’s just what I did. But now it’s time to get down to business! I’m equal parts excited and terrified. Wish me luck!
