When I was a kid I used to go across the street to my friend’s house to play. Sometimes I would stay for dinner or we’d have a sleepover and her mom would make breakfast. I remember eating very normal food there overall, but at the time the meals were a novelty to me. Things like apple pancakes or matzah ball soup with parsnips or turnips. When we had pancakes at my house they were buttermilk (and delicious!) and my mom’s matzah ball soup was the standard carrots, celery and parsley (which I still make to this day).
One meal that I remember that stands out in particular was pizza bagels. My family rarely ate bagels and when we did it was at someone else’s house for brunch. It wasn’t until I was in college that bagels really made an impression on me. But pizza bagels at my friend’s house will always stand out in my mind.
I’m not sure what triggered the memory of pizza bagels a couple weeks ago, but suddenly I decided I had to make them with my kids. So I did what any hungry runner good mother would do, and I made sure we had all the ingredients and then enlisted the help of my kids and my husband to make some for dinner.
This recipe for pizza bagels is delicious, foolproof, and a winner with people of all ages.
