Last week really wasn’t awesome. I mentioned last week in my half marathon recap that I was starting to feel under the weather. As it turns out, I was the last recipient of the lovely family cold and I somehow got it the worst. I ended up missing a day of running, and several miles on the days I did manage to run. But my long run went really well which I was very pleased about.
Here’s how my week went:
Half Marathon Training: Week 12
Tuesday and Wednesday were a bust. I had a fever on both days and there was no way I was even going to attempt to run even if I had the drive to do so (which I didn’t).
Thursday – 3.4 miles
By Wednesday mid-day I was feeling much, much better, so by the time Thursday morning rolled around I thought I’d give running a whirl. I was actually overly optimistic and planned on running 7 miles on Thursday. When I started out I felt great, but by the time I was a mile in my face was trying to rid itself of congestion. I was dripping all over the place and was having a really hard time breathing. I decided I was done and headed home, ending up with just under three and a half miles for the day. Pretty good all things considered!
Friday – 5.17 miles
Friday was much better. Given Thursday’s run, I didn’t have any plans for this run at all. I just wanted to get out there for 2-3 miles and feel good. Turns out I felt great and I certainly could have continued running, but I knew I had a big weekend ahead of me so I reeled it in and settled for five miles.
Saturday – 14 miles
I usually love my long run. I enjoy getting ready for it the night before — mixing my long run beverage, packing my snacks, and picking out my outfit. Sometimes it’s overwhelming especially when the weather seems unpredictable. But for the most part I enjoy the long run ritual.
Saturday morning was different. It was cold and dreary. I was already bored and I hadn’t even stepped foot outside yet. I was just completely unmotivated.
I begrudgingly got dressed and geared up, and as I waited for my watch to find satellites, I decided I was going to listen to podcasts instead of music for this run. That was probably one of the best decisions I could have made.
The podcasts kept me distracted for the first 5 miles until I met up with my friends Noemi and David. We then continued on for another 5 miles together. And when it was time for me to press on without them, I turned my podcasts back on. It truly helped pass the time so much. I forgot how distracting podcasts can be and I’ll have to remember this tip when I’m in training again over the summer.
Running with David and Noemi was fun. We adventured across soccer fields, through a local camp (with permission!), I used the mens bathroom after David cleared it for me, and we ran on the track for a lap, too. It was a fairly entertaining run to say the least.
By the time I got to mile 13, my legs were toast. My friend/neighbor Shannon saw me when I had about a mile left. It was so fantastic to stop and chat for a minute. Not only because I hadn’t seen her in a while but also because my legs just wanted to fall off. I didn’t know how much farther I could have gone without that brief pause.
As soon as I got to my driveway, I sat down. My legs were all done. 14 miles in the books.
Sunday – 4.2 miles
On Sunday morning I met up with my 5K group. We got just over 2 miles in together in a cool mist blanketing Cleveland’s east side. After our workout, I headed home to pick up my crew and we went out for another two miles.
My son rode his bike, daughter in the stroller, and husband and I on foot. It was a terribly painful run for me. I was literally wiped out from Saturday! I was so happy my family came out with me, though. I was so grateful I didn’t have to run two miles alone.
I have one more long run until the Cleveland Half Marathon. Last tough week ahead this week and then a down week before race day!
After the Cleveland half I’ll take a break for a bit. I’m really looking forward to a short respite from training before I start up again for MCM in October.
