As a runner, I tend to do some strange things. What may seem entirely normal and 100% sane to me is probably not at all what other people do. But it turns out most runners do this whacko stuff, too.
If you’re friends with a runner, married to a runner, are considering to become a runner, here’s a quick view into what us runners do that makes perfect sense to us, but none to you:
10 Weird Things Runners Do… That Normal Humans Don’t
1. Save every bib from every race.
Literally. Why? No one knows.
2. Hoard tech wear.
I would say I’m exaggerating, but check out my “shirt” drawer. That’s right, this is full to the brim with just shirts. My shorts and pants drawer is even worse.
3. Hoard worn-through shoes.
There’s something about running shoes. You know they’re worn through and you won’t ever wear them again because you know you’d be risking injury. But you can’t seem to let go. And so they sit in the closet and serve no purpose other than to look like they should be worn again. Maybe to mow the lawn in. RIP shoes.
4. Refuse to accept the weather.
Cold? Check. Rain? Check. Snow? Check. Let’s run!
5. We endlessly try to suck other, rational, people into our warped reality.
Who’s in for 10 miles this weekend?
6. Plan entire week’s worth of meals around training runs and races.
I’ve been known to scour training plans, match it up with the weather, and plan family meals based on temperature and mileage for any given day. It’s a science, really.
7. Create complex spreadsheets for races years in advance.
This happens more often than we should care to admit. Weird things runners do…
8. We won’t wear a race shirt until after the race.
Even if it’s a cotton t-shirt and already washed and dried — don’t want to jinx the outcome!
9. Will wear the same running apparel multiple days in a row.
Even if it stinks, if it’s our favorite or if the conditions dictate a certain outfit, you better believe we’ll be wearing it. Shhhh… as part of runner’s code, we don’t mention it if our running partner is… ripe…
10. Wear trash bags before a race.
Or we go to Target and search clearance racks for anything warm and less than $5. Goodwill, too. Sometimes even our spouse’s closet for a nasty old sweatshirt from grade school.
Weird things runners do…
Truthfully, those are just 10 of the strange things the runner creature will do that the normal human will not. There are lots, lots more.
