This has been a very mild winter in terms of weather and snow. Despite our good weather fortune, my household has been hit with our fair share of illnesses — colds, sniffles, occasional fevers. There are two ways I try to keep healthy during the cold months: I wash my hands like it’s going out of style, and I take my vitamin C. I focus on vitamin C intake both through food and with supplements. I would be lost without my supplements, so all I can say is that it’s a good job that we have access to places like Chemist Direct for access to any vitamins and supplements we need to keep us in good health. This is something that is so important to me and my family.

My husband recently purchased “gummy” vitamins for our kids. I’ve never tried them myself — I normally just add in iron and vitamin C separately, not as part of a multivitamin. I think that’s because I’d rather know exactly what I’m taking when buying from a site officiel. Who even knows what’s in a multivitamin?! I kinda poo-poo’ed them when he brought them home. I hate to ever equate medicine or vitamins to candy or a treat because they aren’t and they shouldn’t be treated as such. Having said that, however, when I received my own batch of Good Gummy vitamins from SmartyPants, they changed my life. My gosh do they taste good! It’s no wonder my kids are begging for vitamins these days. They taste like candy!
Shhh… don’t tell my kids I said that…
The serving size of the SmartyPants vitamins for an adult female is six gummies. After reading how much goodness is packed into a serving, not only is my sweet tooth satisfied, but my nutritional needs are met as well.
The only thing I add these days are iron supplements. I don’t even have to add fish oil because it’s already packed into the SmartyPants vitamins. I’m pleasantly surprised by how much I look forward to taking my vitamins every morning.
There are days, though, when I do need an added boost of vitamin C — say if one of the kids is coming down with a cold, or my husband is sneezy from the germs at work. When this happens, I add in some extra C to my post-workout smoothies.
As promised from last week, I’m sharing my C-boosted smoothie today. It’s a great protein-carb blend, with an additional electrolyte kick. But the most important part is the extra vitamin C. It tastes great, and it’s healthy, nutritional, and filling. I drink it after a hard workout but I’ve also used it as a meal replacement for lunch.
Enjoy!

TALK TO ME!
Gummy vitamins: are they sending the wrong message to kids that vitamins are candy, OR are they good vehicles to pump some extra vitamins in what otherwise may be picky eaters?
