It’s getting to be that time of year again. And I swear I’m not trying to jump to the holidays before it’s even Thanksgiving. I’m definitely not one of those people. But I know there are some of you who prefer to shop before the crowds hit, stores get busy, and people get hangry when they’re out and about during the holiday season sans energy bar for a snack. This post is for you guys. The early shoppers. The sneaky ones who buy things in advance so gift recipients (ahem, spouses) are none the wiser.
I’ve thought long and hard about my compilation for 2015. Some things that were initially on the list were axed. Others have been added. And I’m not splitting it up by gender this year, either. Nope. I’m pulling a Target and keeping things commingled, if you will. This list is by no means an all inclusive list. There are tons more awesome gifts to give an athlete. But after talking with friends and colleagues about sports-related items on our wish lists, this list was born. So without further ado, I present to you my 2015 Ultimate Gift Giving Guide… for Athletes. Proceed!
Windproof Pants
What runner doesn’t need windproof pants? That’s what I wanna know. These pants aren’t cheap, but they can last a lifetime if taken care of properly and maintained. What are windproof pants? Think running tights with Windstopper® on the front where your quads are located. Windproof on the front, breathable on the back. Perfect for winter running. Try places like LL Bean and REI for the best selection of windproof running tights!
Socks
Socks are an easy one. Every athlete can use another pair of socks. Prices range so you could get less expensive ones and use as stocking stuffers, or go all out and buy the more expensive ones as a main gift. The sky’s the limit with athletic socks, folks. Check out injinji, Balega, and Feetures! for some of the most favorite socks among runners. Nowadays you can also get customised socks with your own photographs printed on them. For example, one of my friends from Germany has bought each member of her family a pair of Personalisieren Socken (personalized socks) to open on Christmas morning. I can’t wait to hear all about their reactions!
Race Entry
What better way to surprise your running friend, spouse, child than with a race entry to a race on their bucket list? A race entry will never be poo-poo’ed.
Headbands
Headbands are great and serve many purposes — and can be gender neutral, too! They keep loose hairs out of your eyes. They serve as an ear warmer when it’s not quite cold enough for a winter hat. Use as a neck gaiter in a pinch! Everywhere you look — headbands, headbands, headbands!

GPS Watch
A new GPS watch is on the top of the list for many runners, cyclist, and triathletes. Because really… who wouldn’t want a brand new gadget to play with and track mileage, cadence, heart rate, pace, etc., etc., etc… ? Check out Timex, Garmin, Polar, and TomTom for some of the most popular pieces available.
Gift Certificate to a Sports Store
Not sure what to get the favorite athlete in your life? There’s nothing wrong with a gift card! Runners may prefer a gift certificate to their favorite running store, and cyclists to their favorite cycling store. But honestly — a gift card is an amazing piece of plastic. Don’t shy away from a simple gift like guilt-free shopping!
If the athlete you’re gifting too is also a major sports buff, consider pairing this up with some sports merchandise that they’d love. Whatever sport they’re into, you should be able to find shops that you can buy plenty of merch from. For example, take a look at this west coast eagles merchandise you could buy if your person is into AFL. Similarly, you’re sure to find merch for their favorite sport or favorite team.
Hydration!
So much hydration, such little time. Runners, cyclist, CrossFitters — we all need to stay hydrated! With some of the most excellent hydration systems available today, there’s a plethora of hydration options to choose from. From handhelds to backpacks, to add-on bottles and everything in between, there’s something for everyone. Check out Orange Mud, Camelbak, Nathan to name a few…

Foam Rollers (and other fun devices for self-myofascial release!)
A foam roller isn’t the most glamorous gift to give but I will say this having received one as a gift myself — it’s a perfect gift. It will be well received, used almost every day of the week, and won’t wear out over time. Trust me, a foam roller is perfect.
Road ID
Yeah. We should talk about something as simple as a Road ID. There are far too many accidents out there to not carry an ID with you. With the Road ID, you don’t have to carry a wallet or ID card. Just put it on your wrist, shoe, or ankle, and go! Another very practical gift that won’t go unnoticed. (Use code TAF225XKR6Z for $1.00 off at www.roadid.com.)
The Gift of Coaching…
I saved the best for last. The gift of coaching will be the gift that keeps on giving. Your athlete will be guided by a trained professional to reach their best performance. And who will that person thank when they achieve a time PR or distance PB? You. That’s right. You’ll be the one the athlete thanks and says, “I couldn’t have done it without a coach! Thank you for getting me this wonderful gift!” And if you’re looking for a coach, I know a really great one… 😉
That, my friends, is the 2015 Ultimate Gift Giving Guide… for Athletes. I hope I’ve helped you narrow down some ideas for your favorite athlete in your life. Your recipient will be very happy with anything purchased off this list. And if you need more ideas or specifics, I’m totally happy to help. I have a knack for personal shopping. 😉 Ho! Ho! Ho!
Happy shopping!
