Product Review: Mizuno Breath Thermo

I’m always on the hunt for good running apparel. I scored some killer deals this year. My latest purchase is a running shirt from the Breath Thermo line by Mizuno.

Breath Thermo is a cutting-edge, lightweight fabric. It’s not a fabric treatment or coating, and therefore will never wear out or break down. The way it works is really unique. When you start sweating, the fibers activate and reflect back your own heat. 

When I received my Breath Thermo long sleeve half-zip I almost sent it back. I was looking for a heavier weight half-zip shirt for cold weather runs. I really didn’t think this was what I was looking for. It felt like a base layer you’d wear while skiing or snowboarding. The fabric definitely wasn’t thick enough for running. But since it’s last year’s color, I got it for a steal. I decided to keep it and try it out.

I was so surprised at how warm the ultra thin fabric of this shirt kept me throughout my run. Like, shocked. Seriously. It was life-changing. I’ve since added another piece of the Breath Thermo line to my wardrobe — a wind-resistant half-zip, which I truly love. I’m so glad I bought it because it’s amazing, too.

But let me back up and tell you how I was first introduced to the Breath Thermo line. Back in May, I was on the hunt for arm sleeves that weren’t compression and didn’t squeeze so tight on my bicep that it made my fat overflow out of the top. I had purchased a pair of compression sleeves from a reputable company (a fave of a lot of runners) but was highly disappointed when they were the most unflattering piece of apparel I’ve ever owned. It was almost embarrassing how much fat was spilling over the top of the sleeves. There’s no way I was ever going to wear those in public. I obviously had purchased the wrong type of sleeves for my body type. But I wasn’t going to give up because I really wanted to be able to keep my arms warm and still wear a t-shirt to run in during those in-between temperatures.

At the Cleveland Marathon expo, I just happened across a pair of arm sleeves. They weren’t compression and they were solely for warmth. And they fit perfectly! Enter the Mizuno Breath Thermo arm sleeves. These were my introduction into the Breath Thermo line, and it’s been an amazing ride ever since!

So bottom line — would I recommend Mizuno Breath Thermo to my running buddies and all my friends and family? Totally! It’s amazing stuff. Life-changing, really. I implore you to check it out. You won’t regret it!
