Coaching kids has been an incredibly rewarding experience. We can’t wait for the next session of Kids Run the Nation to begin!
You guys know I love you, right? But I’m working on putting together the final Kids Run the Nation race and I have lots to do. Therefore I’m going to keep today’s post very brief.
A Sneak Peek at Coaching Kids Run the Nation
When I decided to start coaching Kids Run the Nation program in my area, I thought it was going to be teaching kids a little bit of this, a little bit of that — stretching, running, warm-ups, cool-downs. Maybe some drills and anatomy/physiology. That sort of thing. But it has proven to be much more than that — for me, anyway. I’ve never been in any sort of “teaching” position but after working with these kids for the last five weeks and seeing them learn and grow, I now realize the draw for some to the field of education. It truly is very challenging and extremely rewarding.
I think what amazes me most is how much information these kids actually retain. We threw a lot at them — concepts and definitions, form drills, pacing drills — and gave them a quiz at the end. There were some rough patches with the answers, but for the most part they nailed it.
Once this session of Kids Run the Nation is officially over, I’ll recap it and explain about the program a little more in-depth. The highlights: the kids have had a blast, we had a blast, and we can’t wait to do it again!
Looks like time’s up. I gotta get back to race prep!
