Sport Suds is specifically formulated to get rid of gunk and stink. And it’s saving my running clothes and workout apparel one load of laundry at a time!
I work out. A lot. And I sweat a lot, too. Over the course of the year, I run well over 1,000 miles. The bulk of my mileage comes in the warmer months — spring, summer, fall. But I’m just as active in the winter. This is the time I lift weights and participate in other forms of exercise.
And when I’m not working out myself, I’m training others — during track season, recreational running season, cross-country season, and of course, fitness training. I live and breathe sports and fitness. And because of this, at least 80% of my wardrobe is some type of athletic-wear. I don’t buy cheap clothes just to buy cheap clothes. I rely on the adage “you get what you pay for.” I spend a decent amount of money on decent sportswear and let’s face it, I want to protect my investment. Protecting my investment means keeping it clean, free from snags and tears, and smelling as good as it possibly can for as long as it possibly can. Which is sometimes a challenge.
As such, I’ve been on the hunt for a laundry detergent that’s economical, easy on fabrics, and tough enough to get the stink out of my clothes and prolong their wearability for as long as possible. And guess what? I found it…
Liquid or Powder?
I’ve used several sport-specific laundry detergents. One hurdle I always come to is that they’re all liquid detergents. I’m not a huge fan of liquid detergent for many reasons, but mostly because I used to work in sporting goods where my speciality was technical apparel. You know, the stuff that’s supposed to keep you warm and dry? All the brands I worked with were adamant, across the board, that liquid detergent was not to be used on technical fabrics. Not only did the liquid not distribute evenly, sometimes if it was concentrated enough it could potentially gunk up and ruin the fabric.
Now, I realize that detergents have come a long way and I’m sure many of those fabrics have seen advancements so as not to succumb to any ill-effects of globbed up laundry detergent. Regardless, I’ve always been hesitant when using liquid-based laundry detergents on my tech wear and my athletic apparel.
Suffice it to say, I was thrilled to find Sport Suds!

Sport Suds Laundry Detergent Review | Never Going Back!
What is Sport Suds?
Sport Suds is a powdered laundry detergent designed specifically to clean each fiber in clothes to remove chemical residue, oil, and dirt particles.
What sets Sport Suds apart?
So many things! Namely, Sport Suds is:
- Fragrance-free
- Safe for all washable fabrics
- Vegan, perfume, and dye-free
- SEPTIC SAFE!!!*
- Hypoallergenic, non-toxic, and biodegradable
*this is important when you have a septic tank like me… #insertdramaticeyeroll
Personally, what I like most about it (aside from it being a powder), is that it’s safe for use while camping. We don’t camp often so that’s not really the hook for me. But the bigger picture is: if Sport Suds is safe for camping and biodegradable, that means it’s safe for the environment. And I’m pretty sure we can agree that’s a priority for all of us.
How does Sport Suds work?
Sport Suds is specifically formulated to get rid of gunk and stink. But how? Not only does it wash away contaminants and bacteria, it removes the food source for the bacteria. That means bacteria are completely eliminated. It means when you sweat in the clothes again, the bacteria won’t “reactivate” and stink up your shirt right from the start.
By removing the bacteria and their food completely, our clothes smell better and they work better. Compression tights feel more responsive; waterproof fabrics retain their water-repellant properties.
Real talk: does Sport Suds actually work?
Legit YES. Sport Suds totally works. I’ve used it several times now and it’s true — my running tights feel lighter and warmer, and my old workout shirts don’t have a weird lingering smell.
I’ve only ever washed my running packs in a light vinegar solution but I’m tempted to use Sport Suds on them because holy hell… I won’t even describe the rank coming off the straps. Let’s just say ick and leave it at that. TBD but I’ll definitely keep you posted.
Bottom line: would I recommend Sport Suds?
I think that’s an unequivocal YES. Sport Suds is saving my running and workout apparel one load of laundry at a time. I haven’t even washed my packs or my waterproof jackets in it yet, but I can’t wait to see how those turn out after a wash. They’ll be like brand new!
