This post is sponsored by Run the Edge. Thank you to sponsors for supporting Running on Happy.

In the past, one of my yearly goals was to run 1,000 miles. I accomplished this goal several times. 2017 was the first year I didn’t set a mileage goal for myself. Instead, I was focused on setting PRs for all my races. Mission: accomplished. And much to my surprise, I ended up logging almost 1,500 miles through all my training. This year I’m gunning to run an ultra (and likely some marathons and halfs along the way). Assuming I’m healed and ready to train in a few weeks or a month, I should be well on my way to accomplishing this goal as well. As a result of all my training, it’s likely the mileage will follow. In 2018, one of my goals is to Run the Year.

If you’re a runner then you’re probably familiar with some of the running greats. Last names like Flanagan, Keflezighi, Hall, Linden, Cragg, and Goucher likely stand out to you. And if you’re a runner you might be familiar with Run the Edge, a virtual running company created by Olympian Adam Goucher and ultra marathoner Tim Catalano.

Let’s Run the Year! 2,018 Miles in 2018

Run the Year is the yearly challenge from Run the Edge to encourage and entice runners to complete a set amount of miles with each corresponding year. This year, for example, the challenge is to run 2,018 miles in 2018.

Seems like quite the hefty challenge, doesn’t it? For most people (myself included), running 1,000 miles in a year is a huge milestone. Aiming for 2,018 may seem downright daunting. But the beauty of the Run the Year program is your ability to take part in the challenge as an individual or as part of a team. As an individual, yes, you are responsible for completing all the miles on your own. But when you commit as a team, you log as many miles as you can and rely on your team members to contribute to the mileage goal as well.

Can I Run the Edge?

Run the Edge is an all-inclusive virtual running community created to encourage everyone to get off the couch, log some miles, and build a worldwide running community. The three-pronged mission of Run the Edge is inclusion, challenge, and success. It’s not just limited to the United States and it’s not just for runners. You can walk, crawl, or run to achieve your distance goals. So yeah — anyone can Run the Edge by signing up for this year’s Run the Year challenge.

How Do I Participate?

Participation in Run the Year is easy. You can run, walk, hike, hop — whatever you need to do to log your miles. The only requirement is that you’re on your feet (no bikes, no swimming — but there’s a separate challenge for that if you’re interested! Scroll down for more.).

Grab a friend, or two or three, and form a team to lessen your own mileage requirements. Or go on your own for an added challenge! A further incentive to give you or your team a boost is to run for charity. The value of giving to charity has never been so important as a result you may want to consider other ways you can play a part in supporting a good cause. This could include taking part in charity sweepstakes. But if you’re solely focused on this run then you’ll log your miles in the mileage tracker and be able to join a Facebook group for added encouragement and enticement in the meantime.

If you’re ready to give it a go, click this link and sign up using code ONHAPPY18 for $5 off any package. Once you sign up, you’ll have access to the Facebook group, the mileage log, and a bunch of other cool stuff.

Amerithon

Remember when I mentioned you could bike or swim in a separate challenge? That’s the Amerithon challenge. To participate in the Amerithon challenge you need to log 3,521 miles but you can do so swimming, cycling, hiking, or running (and yes, crawling counts, too). You have the ability of having a team of up to eight if you please and the medal is pretty sweet. To learn more about the Amerithon challenge, click this link. You can use code ONHAPPY18 for $5 off this challenge as well!

Challenge Yourself and Your Friends

Run the Year is a supportive, amazing community challenge. I’ve already signed up and I can’t wait to start logging some miles. If you’re interested in logging miles as part of my team, let’s connect! At the rate I’m running, I won’t be able to log all 2,018 miles on my own but I would love to partner up. Don’t forget to use code ONHAPPY18 for $5 off!

Happy running!
