Thank you to Gerolsteiner Sparkling Mineral Water for sponsoring this post. All opinions and experiences are my own.
A couple weeks ago, I told you about the Gerolsteiner Sparkling Detox in September. Well, wouldn’t you know it, September is here and it’s almost detox time. Starting September 11, I’m detoxing with Gerolsteiner Sparkling Mineral Water for five days. That means no juice, no coffee, no nothing. It’s not gonna be easy but hopefully it’ll be worth it.
Today’s the Friday Five 2.0 and our topic is post-race meals and snacks. While I’m a big fan of eating all the food after a race, today I’m going to tell you why I’m taking part in the Gerolsteiner Sparkling Mineral Water detox before my race.
I have a confession. I’ve never done a detox before. I’ve never juice cleansed. I have never stripped down my diet completely. So in taking part in the Gerolsteiner Sparkling Detox, I’m making a HUGE leap. Here’s why I’m doing it:
5 Reasons Why I’m Detoxing with Gerolsteiner Sparkling Mineral Water
1. I’m an autoimmune, inflammatory disease sufferer.
And it stinks. My symptoms aren’t too terrible and for that I’m very grateful. But they’re still there nonetheless. I desperately need to clean up my eating. I’m mostly good on the beverage front, but caffeine is a possible trigger so my body may do very well without it. I’m hoping to more or less cleanse my system with the upcoming detox.
2. As an inflammatory disease sufferer, I feel more prone to inflammation induced by training.
This is completely anecdotal and I’ve done zero research on this topic. But I swear, being predisposed to inflammation makes me a prime candidate for a chain reaction of inflammation as it relates to training. If my friend’s ankle hurts, mine hurts threefold. If my hip is achy, not only is it my hip but also my knee and ankle. By going through the detox, I’m hoping to reset my inflammatory response. We’ll see if my theory holds. This may also need to be more of a long-term experiment of one. Tbd…
3. I need the extra minerals!
Did I mention I’m an inflammatory disease sufferer? I did… Well, as it turns out, one of the big triggers for me is dairy. Which I already knew but I’ve been denying for years. I eat fairly clean already but I know I don’t get enough calcium without yogurt or other forms of dairy. I could do the dairy-free substitutes but they don’t always agree with my tummy so I’d rather just not have any “dairy” at all. One of the big draws to me with the Gerolsteiner Sparkling Detox is the amount of calcium in 8 fl oz of sparkling mineral water. Gerolsteiner has 84 mg! Not to mention the magnesium, which as an athlete, I also need more of. There are studies to suggest that magnesium requirements are higher for athletes, so the magnesium and calcium in sparkling mineral water are perfect for me.
4. A nutritionist and fitness expert will be leading us through the challenge.
Ariane Hundt, a Nutritionist and Fitness Expert in NYC, will lead us through the Gerolsteiner Sparkling Detox in the Sparkling Detox Facebook group. I’m excited to follow along and reap the benefits from her expert advice. I feel like I always ask a lot of questions of nutritionists in my circle and this will be a really great resource for me. Plus, Ariane was born in Germany and grew up drinking Gerolsteiner! Something that fascinates me is that the more German-born people I talk to, the more I hear they grew up drinking Gerolsteiner — even more so than plain old tap water. I can’t wait to hear what Ariane and others have to say about it!
5. I like a good challenge!
What can I say? I like a good challenge! It may be inane, but it’s true. I want to see if I’m able to hold myself to only drinking Gerolsteiner Sparkling Mineral Water for five whole days. I think I can do it. What do you think?
