I rarely regret buying things. As I mentioned last week, if I’m spending good money on something, I make sure I love it. And if you read my tips to buying running apparel, you saw that I’m thrifty for most items. Call it frugal, call it cheap, call it whatever you want — it’s just smart spending.
Welcome back to another week of Friday Five 2.0 awesome. I hope you’ll link up with the ladies of Fairytales and Fitness and myself this week (and every week)!
As a smart (-ish) shopper, it’s hard to buy things I’d rather not have purchased. Having said that, there are things that I regret not having purchased in the first place — or not buying more of (like clearance shorts or capris). Here are a few of those things I wish I had bought — or gotten multiples of — when I had the opportunity:
I Wish I Had More…
1. Running capris
I have one pair of running capris. It’s tragic. They’re from when I first started running outside, so… like 2011? 2012? Anyway, I got them on clearance and at the time I had no clue how far running would take me. Plus I figured I’d buy one pair and if I liked them I could get more. ROOKIE MISTAKE. Don’t do that. If you see something you like, buy it. You can always return it later. Well, almost always… (wait for it).
Needless to say, I never found another pair. And I love the ones I have because I’m short and they’re short — it’s like a match made in shorty heaven. All the capris I’ve tried on in the following years have been far too long on me. It’s no good. And now the logo is peeling off which means I’m destined to losing my beloved capris soon. (Where’s the crying emoji when I need it…?)
2. Arm sleeves
OMG, arm sleeves. There is one kind of arm sleeves that I can wear that I love and that love me back. And they are the Breath Thermo sleeves from Mizuno. Problem? The style I love is no longer in rotation. Thankfully I had the foresight to see this happening so I did buy a second pair a few short weeks after I bought the first pair. But if I knew then that I would love them as much as I do, I would have hoarded and stockpiled.
3. Running shoes
Okay so there is ONE thing I regretted buying. Too many running shoes. (Say wha?!)
When I first started running, I wore a size 6. I found the brand and shoe I loved. I bought them over and over again. So when I began training for my first marathon, of course I stockpiled when they switched the style of the model I loved. I bought four pairs — I had two in rotation and two waiting for their turn. Unfortunately for me, I was in the wrong size (for a marathon) and didn’t know it until tragedy struck and I bruised toenails and even lost one. And of course, I was stuck with two pairs of the wrong size shoe and I couldn’t return them! (One and only time this has happened. But it does happen.) Whomp whomp. So yeah, one purchase I did regret for sure. At least I learned a valuable lesson (and that is: get fitted for running shoes).
4. Wind pants
Last winter I was at the sporting goods store and saw these amazing wind pants. They were light but wide enough to slip over running tights. They were remarkably expensive, though, so I didn’t buy them. Instead, I found a pair of wind pants online (Active GearUp maybe?) and got them. They’re very lightweight and they are definitely windproof. But they aren’t wide enough to double layer. So while I’m happy I have them, I’m a kind of bummed I didn’t get the first pair I saw. Ah well, live and learn!
5. INKnBURN vault
Every now and again, INKnBURN releases surprise bags full of goodies from their “vault.” They’re pretty expensive and I’m not comfortable gambling that I’d receive designs or pieces that I’d like so I’ve never made a surprise vault purchase. Do I regret it? When I see people posting their photos of what they’ve received and it’s something I’ve wanted, yes I regret it. But then I see the bags of things that there’s no way in hell I would wear (or want) and I don’t feel so bad. I go back and forth on this one. Because let’s face it, I want all the things.
Usually being thrifty and frugal is a good thing — especially when it comes to running clothes and gear. But sometimes I find I want (or need) more of something that I only intended to buy one of. It’s a delicate balancing act. 🙂
