5 Tech Tools I’ve Used Through My Fitness Journey

September 2, 2016

It’s my favorite day of the week — Friday! And since it’s Friday, that means the Friday Five linkup! Another great part of Friday. But before I start on this week’s theme, I want to thank you guys for some podcast suggestions last week. Several of you had mentioned Rich Roll, and while I had the podcast on my phone already, I had never listened to it. Well, I listened the other day on my 8-mile run and I was really interested by what was being said. The episode I listened to was the one about diabetes and alzheimer’s and other chronic diseases. A lot of it was stuff I already knew but it was nice to hear it from a medical professional and not just the latest trendy healthy lifestyle website. So thanks, guys!

Onto this week — this week’s theme is fitness. Since 2009/2010, I’ve focused my life on fitness and everything that goes along with it. Eating healthy, getting exercise, running — all the good stuff (hear that, Rich Roll? Since 2010!). Through my fitness journey I’ve used five apps or pieces of technology to help me along. In no particular order they are:

5 Tech Tools I've Used Through My Fitness Journey | Running on Happy

5 Tech Tools I’ve Used Through My Fitness Journey

1. MyPlate

The most important app I used in the beginning of my fitness journey is hands down the MyPlate app from LIVESTRONG. It was life-changing for me. I know these kinds of tools aren’t useful for everyone, but it made a big, positive impact in my life and I’m so grateful I started using it.

2. MapMyRun

When I first started running outside, I needed a way to figure out how far I was going. I first mapped my route on the computer. Then later on, when I had an armband for my phone, I downloaded the app on my phone and loved hearing the lady call out my splits. Plus I didn’t have to map anything before heading out — I could just go!

3. Charity Miles

Charity Miles used to be one of my all-time favorite apps, and then my phone starting quitting the app every time I opened it! Whomp whomp. Kind of a bummer. I haven’t tried to reload it in a while. I should do that. But anyways, if you don’t log your miles with Charity Miles already, I highly recommend it. You don’t even have to do anything — you just press go!

4. Daily Mile

DailyMile is a pre-Garmin app I used to use. I used to use DailyMile mostly for treadmill days. My treadmill doesn’t give me splits so I would use DailyMile to figure out my average speed translated from miles per hour. Let me ask this — who really wants to know how fast they’re running miles per hour? Do you? Because I’ve literally never heard anyone say, “I had a great run today! I ran 7.5 mph!”

5. Garmin Forerunner 15

My beloved Garmin. I’m so old school. I use the Garmin Forerunner 15. Why? Because it’s simple as heck. And I also got it for free using credit card reward points. Win! I love it so much. I do worry about the battery life, though. It made it through my first marathon, though, and that was a doozy. Hopefully it’s get a good long life ahead of it.

I bet one of these tools will help YOU on your fitness journey! #runchat #FitFluential #SweatPink

That’s my running app/tech history in a nutshell. Those are the tools that got me from point A to where I am now – and perhaps they’ll inspire you as you start a journey to fitness of your own. Thanks, technology!
