Rockin’ in the Free World: Rock Hall Half Marathon

July 7, 2016

On August 14th, long after the Republican National Convention has closed up shop in the CLE, a larger-than-life half marathon will take place. One of my all-time favorite half marathons, in fact: the second annual Rock Hall Half Marathon.

Rockin’ in the Free World: Rock Hall Half Marathon

I was honored and excited to have been able to run the inaugural race in 2015, even if it was mere days after I moved. It was a great course and the race company, Greater Cleveland XC, always does a phenomenal job. This year will be no exception, I’m sure. The course is a much needed complement to the “west side” courses many Clevelanders know and love. For me, a native east sider, the Rock Hall Half is a welcome change. I like the familiarity of the areas I’m running through, and I particularly enjoy running through the Cultural Gardens on MLK.

The race begins and ends at the famed Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum situated on the shore of Lake Erie. It’s a fun, festive, and easy-going atmosphere. And despite some nay-sayers not liking an August half marathon, the weather in August is usually quite comfortable. It’s warmer than those spring races that usually top out in the mid 50s (or in the case of the Cleveland Half this year, low 30s!!) but for a summertime race, it’s a nice time of year.

In tandem with the half marathon is the Rock City 5K. Both races offer finishers medals. In fact, the group of runners I’m coaching right now are training for the Rock City 5K. I’m really looking forward to seeing their achievements come race day.
