5 Reasons to Love Summer Produce

July 29, 2016

TGIF, y’all. This has been a trying week, for sure. Lack of sleep, running every day, staying up late to watch politics and whatnot. Zzzzzzz… I look forward to sleeping all the sleeps this weekend, that’s for sure.

But before I do that, I’d love to tell you why summer produce is the best! Summer brings colorful fruits and veggies, farmers markets, and all sorts of fantastic fresh-eating opportunities. Yum!

5 Reasons to Love Summer Produce | Running on Happy

5 Reasons to Love Summer Produce

1. It’s fresh!

There’s literally nothing better than fresh fruits and vegetables. In the summer months, fresh produce abounds usually for a very fair price. In the winter when you purchase fruits and veggies, it’s usually from many states away from where you live, for a higher price, and it’s not nearly as tasty.

2. Farmers markets aplenty.

Who doesn’t love a Sunday morning trip to the farmers market? There’s so much awesome food and so many fantastic wares. Near us, we are privy to artisan cream cheese, homemade soaps, even clothes and knick knacks. And that’s in addition to the pies, fresh fruit, vegetables, local milk, and eggs available.

3. Eating across the rainbow becomes a no-brainer.

It’s true — eating across the rainbow is hands down one of the easiest (and best) ways to ensure you’re getting all your vitamins and nutrients. And in the summer, it’s so easy to walk into the grocery store (or farmers market) and literally pick an item to represent each color of the rainbow. And it’s delicious, too. Some may say… magically delicious… ?

4. Joining a farm share ensures you’re buying local produce.

We love, love, love our farm share. Everything we get is local. We signed up for the vegetarian bag, but everything from the meat to the cheese to the swiss chard to the bigger-than-my-thigh zucchinis are all local. It makes me feel better about supporting my local economy because I literally know where my food’s coming from.

5. You can literally eat fruit from the trees and vegetables from the garden.

And there’s no shame in it because chances are, if you’re gardening at your house, with your friend, or even at your aunt’s, there’s no pesticides! Brush it off and you’re good to go! (Well, unless there’s deer around… then you might want to wash it first.) Summer produce, FTW!
