No Basement, Too Much Carpet, and Running Injuries

July 28, 2016

I’m just gonna give it to you straight. I moved last year into a pretty rad house. It’s like a 1960s party house, complete with a wet bar (a giant one, mind you, not just one of those little ones tucked away inside a closet in the corner of the room), a former putting green, and breathtaking views of the nature around us.

Having said that… my two complaints about this house are 1) there’s no basement (i.e. no workout room) 2) there’s carpet everywhere.

No Basement, Too Much Carpet, Running Injuries

Fair warning: this post may or may not be construed as complaining. I swear I’m not complaining. I’m getting my act together.

You might be asking yourself why I’m telling you about basements and carpet. I’m telling you because ever since we moved into this house, I’ve been slacking on my strength training, my yoga practice, and everything else supplemental to running. I’ve been falling apart for most of the year, and now that my foot is bothering me, I’m on the brink of panicking about MCM.

Carpet!!!!

The lack of a training room isn’t that bad. I mean, I could easily move my weights and yoga mat to any other room of the house. The biggest issue is the carpet. Because let’s face it, who wants to lace up and workout on… carpet? Sweaty carpet stains and carpet burn alert! So not a sweat-worthy vibe. You feel me?

I’m considering this post my pep-talk to myself. I need to get my butt in gear. I cannot afford to sustain any additional injuries. I need to be diligent about my strength training. I need to FOCUS.

This weekend I’m driving my bestie, Noemi, to Texas. When I come home, no-holds barred. The carpet’s gotta go. Weights have to move front and center. I’m transforming my cushy home office into a workout room. I’ll stay up late every night ripping carpet up and replacing it with rubber gym-room flooring. I don’t have time for this. Blog posts may suffer, cooking may fall to the wayside. But I’ll be damned if I screw myself by getting injured because I wasn’t diligent with my strengthening and stretching. Selfie: consider this your last warning!!

NO EXCUSES.

I hold my clients accountable for things I need to be holding myself accountable for. I have a coach who does whip me into shape but he can’t physically make me do my supplemental workouts. It doesn’t work like that. The responsbility is on me, and I’m owning it.

Let’s do this.
