Meatless Monday: Summer Snacking Made Simple

June 6, 2016

We’re officially entering the summer season in the northern hemisphere and I couldn’t be more excited! I’ve hemmed and hawed about sending my son to camp this summer and I’ve ultimately decided not to. I’ve got big plans for us this summer with various outings and field trips. There are lots of things to see and do in our area, and I can’t wait to take my little people on many adventures over the next two months.

Summer Snacking Made Simple | Summer | Meatless Monday | Running on Happy

One of the things I need to think about when I’m with my kids are snacks and their hunger needs. If you’re a parent, you probably know what I’m talking about. We like to follow a healthy snack guide ourselves but they’re even more important for kids. Kids get hangry in an instant and if they aren’t fed stat, it’s all over. Waterpark field trip? Forget about it… you’re done. Outdoor mall for froyo and new shoes? Game over. Playground? That’s dicey territory sans food. There’s literally nothing you can do to quell the storm when your child is in a fit of “hanger” than to shove food in their face ASAP.

I have a few favorite go-to items that I almost always have stashed in my bag or center console for snacking purposes. They’re portable, they’re not run-of-the-mill standard kid-snacks, and they’re pretty tasty. Check it out!

Summer Snacking Made Simple

Just Tomatoes! Freeze Dried Fruits and Veggies

These little vegetable morsels are [expletive] delicious. Who’da thunk freeze dried vegetables would be amazing?! Certainly not this girl. But let me just tell you something. They’re not only delicious, but they’re good for you. The entire Just Tomatoes! line is literally just ______ fill in the blank. Just raspberries? Yes, they’re just raspberries. Just peas? Yes, they are literally just peas. There’s nothing added. Ever. They’re great to snack on – perfect for both adults and kids – and they’re great year-round. I realize it’s counterintuitive to buy freeze dried fruits and veggies in the summer when fresh fruits and veggies are usually overly-abundant. But let me throw this at you: ever try to eat a handful of raisins or dried cranberries on-the-go? What happened? You ended up with sticky hands, didn’t you? The freeze dried deliciousness of Just Tomatoes! is perfect for road trips, zoo trips, playground trips – you name it. Just trust me. I got you.

CLIF Kid ZBar

Another thing I love to have on-hand for hangry children? CLIF Kid ZBar. They’re organic and not full of stuff I can’t pronounce, which is huge. Plus my kids love ’em so it’s kind of a no-brainer. I can’t recommend these enough.

Honey Stingers Chews and Waffles

So Honey Stinger — fabulous. Have you had any of their products? I love them as run fuel but I also love their stuff for snacking purposes. For me, I go for the protein and energy bars. They’re awesome.

For my kids, they like the waffles and the chews. A couple years ago my son got to taste-test the new-at-the-time waffles and chews and he really enjoyed them. Fast forward and now here we are and both my kids love them.

Raisins

Nature’s fruit snacks, people. Can’t get much simpler than that, right? Those little boxes of traveling raisins are perfect for little hands (and big hands for us grown-ups, too) and they’re easy to take with you. Our favorites are Newman’s Own Organic Raisins. Mmmmm!

My pantry is almost fully-stocked for our summer adventures. I have a few more things to add and then we’re good to go all summer long. I’m really looking forward to all the fun shenanigans this summer — with my well-fed, snacking little people, of course.

Tasty on-the-go snacks for your next summertime adventure! #MeatlessMonday #chasingkids
