This post is sponsored by Manitoba Harvest Hemp Hearts. All opinions in this review are my own.
Back in October, I had the pleasure of reviewing Manitoba Harvest Hemp Hearts. Lucky for me, another opportunity presented itself, and I get to review them all over again! If you’re in the market for Hemp Hearts, I strongly encourage you to read both reviews as they contain different, complementary information.
Nothing much has changed since my initial review. Except that I’ve been pining for them ever since. I originally used them on sandwiches and salads. This time I got creative. I used them in lasagna, and even used them in a homemade red sauce. The red sauce recipe is below.

Hemp Hearts as a layer in lasagna! |
What are hemp hearts and why should you eat them? Hemp hearts are shelled hemp seeds. They are among the most balanced source of proteins, essential fats and vitamins found in nature. Hemp seeds contain all nine essential amino acids. They are very high in easily digestible protein, and contain high amounts of fatty acids and fiber. They are a powerhouse of nutrition for our bodies. Plus, they’re eco-friendly to boot.
Manitoba Harvest Hemp Hearts come in a convenient resealable pouch. Be sure to refrigerate after opening! My favorite thing about the hemp hearts is that I can eat them and add them to any dish, without compromising any flavor. The texture changes a bit but usually for the better.
Bottom line — would I recommend Manitoba Harvest Hemp Hearts to friends and family? Yes. And I have. And I will again and again.
On to what I know you’ve been waiting for: the recipe. This recipe was inspired by a recipe I found in Vegetarian Times magazine. It’s a yummy original recipe, but I made a few adjustments to fit my family’s tastes. Enjoy!
Garlicky Tomato Sauce with Hemp Hearts
Ingredients
- 1 Tbsp olive oil
- 1/4 C white onion, diced
- 1/4 C red onion, diced
- 2 garlic cloves, minced
- 28 oz can crushed tomatoes with basil
- 2 Tbsp Manitoba Harvest Hemp Hearts
Directions
Heat oil in a saucepan over medium heat. Add onion and garlic and saute, stirring occasionally, about 5 minutes or until onions are soft.
Add crushed tomatoes and hemp hearts and simmer 20-25 minutes, or until sauce has thickened up. Serve over pasta of choice. Sprinkle with freshly grated parmesan cheese.
You know what else? I’ve got another giveaway. 🙂 I’m so excited because I think you’re going to love these.
