Flu shots hurt, but I can’t wait to race!

December 11, 2014
I just got my flu shot. My arm hurts. And that’s putting it mildly. I’ve gotten flu shots before and it’s never felt like this. I must have been flexing when she shot me. Oh, the agony!
I finally got vaccinated because I’m pretty certain my boy is coming down with the flu. I sent my husband a message telling him to go to CVS and get his flu shot on the way home from work, and as soon as he got home I would go get mine.
The usual post-school position. But this time it ended with a fever. 🙁

The shot wasn’t a big deal. I felt a pinch and then the rush of the medicine. (Gross, I know.) But an hour later and it suddenly felt very, very sore. At first I thought it was because I lifted weights earlier. Then I realized I didn’t work the muscle in question. Duh. Flu shot.
The flu is spreading like wildfire and although this vaccine may be ineffective this year, I’d like to think that I’m at least slightly ahead of the game in terms of preparation. I had the flu twice in the same season a few years ago and it was not pleasant. I was laid out for a week with a fever and fatigue. No good, people. No good.
In any event, my kids enjoyed an afternoon of movies and snacks. My fingers are crossed Little Bee doesn’t pick this up. If she does, we are heading straight to the doc for some Tamiflu.

Polar Express, anyone?

Meanwhile, while Boo was watching TV after school, and I was wholly unaware of the ickiness lurking beside me, I was in runner bliss — checking out my race schedule for 2015, picking races off that weren’t high on my priority list, and researching the ones that were. I’ve narrowed it down to one spring half marathon and one fall half, and possibly a fall full marathon. And of course several local 5Ks. It will be interesting to see how this shakes out. The big three will require a bit of travel. I can’t wait to decide and then to start training! The uncertainty is stressing me out. There are so many awesome races I want to do. I’m sure a lot of people say this, but if money and physical well being weren’t factors, I would totally run them all. Maybe one day when I’m She-Ra.
That’s me. She-Ra. Yep.
What’s new with you?
Have you evaded the flu thus far?

How’s your 2015 race schedule looking? And if you’re not racing, have you set any personal fitness goals for 2015?
