What Dreams May Come: Rest in Peace, Robin Williams

August 12, 2014
I had a post ready for today. It was all about my weekend. I’ll save it for another day.
As I’m sure you have heard by now, Robin Williams has passed. He took his own life. I have no idea why his death is affecting me in such a profound manner, but it is. I am so saddened by the loss of such a sincere and talented man. I never knew him. But I felt like I did. I knew someone that was like him once.
The tragic loss of someone I viewed as upbeat, charismatic, and sociable man gives me pause. It makes me stop to wonder and think about those around me. How many people do I know that are battling depression every day? How many of these people seem happy and well on the outside, but are truthfully at odds with themselves on the inside? How many people project a happy-go-lucky comedic nature but are terrorized by demons? And more importantly, how do I help? I know many that are suffering will look to Read more about products and treatments that can help them, which is good, but I want to know how I can provide help in a situation like this.
I don’t think there’s anything I can personally do to help people that I may know that are battling this awful disease. That’s definitely a job for the professionals like those at Psych Company, who have spent years training to be equipped with the knowledge they have to help people take control of their mental health again. But I can be a shoulder to lean on, a friend to talk to, and a warm hug to embrace them. I have found peace from anxiety and having the blues by running and exercising. But sometimes endorphins aren’t enough. Sometimes inspirational messages posted on Facebook just won’t do the trick.
Have you seen the movie What Dreams May Come? It’s a beautiful film about love and loss. It’s creative and inspiring in an artistic way, and is generally very well done. But what saddens me the most about it is the seemingly strong resemblance of character and real-life persona. You see, Robin Williams’s character pulls his wife out of the depths of depression. She is brought back by him, and yet he could not do the same for himself in real life.
Rest in peace, Robin. I hope your dreams are better than your reality. #whatdreamsmaycome
