HAPPY 4th of JULY!
Another one of my favorite holidays. I love the patriotism, I love the red, white, and blue. I love spending time with family and friends. This time round I’ve even bought ourselves an American flag and I’m currently looking for flagpoles for sale so I can watch our flag as it’s tossed around by the wind in our backyard. And most of all, I love our freedom afforded to us by living in this beautiful country. The land of the free and the brave! Don’t forget to be grateful for the lives we live here in the States. We enjoy many more freedoms than hopefully any of us will ever realize. I am thankful every day.
I’m looking forward to this afternoon when we host an annual 4th of July picnic with friends from our playgroup. The weather is perfect. Not too hot, not too cold. Sun is shining, birds are singing… hey, did you make your Red, White and Blue Waffles this morning!? We did!
Today we get to hear from Emily on how she balance her life with running and training. She has a fun story as a newlywed!

Hi there! My name is Emily and I blog at Whatever Floats Your Oats. I share my experiences with fitness, races, healthy eating, hobbies and general adventures as a newlywed adjusting to life in Texas.
What are you training for?
A half marathon toward the end of June. I’m planning on doing another half marathon in the fall … and hopefully a full marathon in the spring!
How do you balance your training with family time and work?
I try to schedule my long runs on the weekend while my husband has another activity. That way, the long runs don’t take away from our time together. My husband isn’t a big runner so sometimes we go to the gym and strength train together. I love our gym dates! I also do shorter runs after work at the gym with some of my co-workers. We try to attend at least one strength training class a week together. I find that catching up with girlfriends while working out is a great way to squeeze both time with friends and exercise into a busy schedule.
Another important part of my training is refueling with healthy food. I pack breakfasts, lunches and a snack the night before work so I can make sure I have healthy options during the day. My breakfast is usually overnight oats and I love bringing leftovers from dinner for lunch the next day. Easy and tasty!!
Who is your biggest supporter?
My husband! He cheers for me at race finish lines and helps me make great playlists for my runs. When I get stressed about making time for long runs, he helps me re-evaluate my schedule and reminds me that my races will go better and I will be happier if I keep doing my training runs.
My co-workers are also very supportive. They offer helpful advice and ask about my progress after long runs and races.
