7 Tips for Safe Running

July 31, 2014

Remember yesterday’s post about my panicked run? I had a much better run this morning. I ran with my friend, then ended with some strength work and techno. I kept my eye out for new runners or people on our route. And I told her about the panicked episode yesterday. I figure I can’t leave you guys hanging with the safety tips. As promised, here are seven tips to safe and enjoyable running. (And these tips can be applied to every day life!)

7 Tips for Safe Running

1. Carry mace or pepper spray. And know how to use it! Don’t think just because you have it means you’ll know how to effectively aim while running. Become familiar with it before heading out.

2. Give your friends, family, or spouse your route and expected finish time.

3. Don’t make eye contact with members of the opposite sex. Guys, even if it makes you look like a jerk and you’re a nice guy, don’t look at women running by. Ladies, don’t be friendly and say hello to men running. Even if it’s just runners being friendly, you never know. (This tip actually comes from my husband.)

4. Run with your phone. If it’s too big, invest in a belt and carry it with you. There are a lot of great ones on the market and readily available.

5. Vary your route. Try not to run the same route on consecutive days. If someone is watching you, which is highly unlikely but always possible, and you run the same route, they’ll know what time to expect you and where. Don’t give them the upper hand.

6. Stay alert even when you’re close to home! You are most vulnerable entering and exiting your home. While leaving or returning from home, we tend to let our guard down. We assume we are safe. Also, as runners, our minds tend to be busy pre and post run — did I forget something? What’s my route today? I hope I don’t see any deer (no, just me?). That was a great run! What were my splits? How to stay safe? Stay alert. Don’t let your guard down just because you’re right outside your door.

7. Run with friends. The easiest way to stay safe is to travel in numbers. And guess what? It’s fun, too! Running with friends makes the miles and time pass by without much notice. You’ll enjoy great conversation, likely vary your speed, and have an overall positive experience. Plus, a predator is less likely to take two or more people than just one.

Follow these simple safety tips and you’ll be running on happy, no problem. Need some gear  or safety recommendations? I’d be happy to help. Post in the comments below!
