5 [Easy] Ways to Unplug and Enjoy the Summer

July 1, 2014

In this day and age of the incessant feed of information through digital technology — television, social media, blogs (blogs?!), newsfeeds, photos — it can be tough to break away from your device. iPhones, Androids, laptops… sometimes they feel like our lifelines. And sometimes they are. But more often than not, these tiny digital demons are not lifelines. They are parasites sucking our “here and now” and presence of mind more than we know.
Summer is the best (and arguably the easiest) time to take a break from the monotony and detachment that digital technology often brings. Here are five quick ways to put down the phone and reconnect with friends, family, and nature.

5 [Easy] Ways to Unplug and Enjoy the Summer!

1. Go for a run!
Of course this would be my number 1. 🙂 But there is no better way to lose yourself in the moment and decompress than to go for a run.

2. Ride your bike.
Relive your youth by going for a bike ride. No training here, just good old fashioned fun.

3. Hike in a local park.
Take your dog, your kids, your spouse or partner. Take in the scents of the forest and wildlife. Leave the iPhone at home.

4. Go fishing! Or canoeing! Or BOTH! Take your adventure on the water with your family or friends. No electricity here so no way to plug in anyhow!

5. Sit around a campfire.
Check out the selection of fire pits at your local home improvement or hardware store, grab some marshmallows on your way home. Ba-da-bing, ba-da-boom. Campfire in your yard! If it’s something you’re considering, you can read up on some Propane Fire Pits FAQ to make sure that your outdoor area is suitable and then you’ll be able to get the fire pit of your dreams. Wouldn’t this be a great idea? If you really felt in the mood for improving the rest of your home, you could even have a small decking built using some of the materials provided by somewhere like dino decking to fit in with the rest of your yard design. And being able to sit with your friends around the campfire could set the mood for the rest of your summer. Warning: build fires with caution. And if you can’t build a fire in your neighborhood, head to the woods and make your fire in one of the plentiful fire-rings provided by many parks.

Hope you find ways to enjoy your summer to the fullest! Unplug and unwind when you can! Have a happy day!
