Last night was the most amazing night I’ve had in a long time. It wasn’t amazing as in, “I went out to the bars and got wasted…” or “I saw the best movie!” or even “we had a great date night and tried a new restaurant!” It was none of those. It was amazing in the sense that I spent it with great friends and fellow moms, some of whom are also runners. We shared lots of laughs, a few glasses of wine (or pre-mixed margaritas in some cases), and most importantly, made 51+ tutus for a couple of our local Girls on the Run sites.
Tulle… Lots and lots of tulle…
Our lovely hostess, getting down to business!
To be honest, this is my first direct experience with Girls on the Run. I can’t wait to be more involved with this organization. I think I feel a deep connection to it not only because I’m a runner and a mama, but also because I had the fortunate experience to attend an all girls summer camp. As I’ve mentioned before over the years of the life of my blog, I am so thankful that I had that experience. It shaped who I am today, and I wouldn’t change it for the world. Girls on the Run seems a lot like that experience. Not only do the girls learn about healthy life choices and running, they learn life skills and how to be confident, independent young women.
If you don’t know much about Girls on the Run, or perhaps have never heard of this group, here’s the link. Check them out.
So how did I come about this opportunity to create tutus for GOTR? I had emailed them to ask how to get involved several months ago. The season is coming quickly to an end, so volunteer opportunities were limited. Once the SELF Magazine tutu debacle happened, I immediately thought of my local GOTR council and contacted them to offer to make some tutus. The first response was, “well, we have 800 girls so that might not be possible.” Fair enough. I didn’t even know how to make a tutu. 800 was a bit much!
Work it, ladies!
About a month ago I was contacted by them to say some of the sites were indeed interested in tutus! Thankfully I reached out to my fabulous playgroup and the mamas came out to volunteer to help! And luckily there are several crafty ladies in the group — and one who pre-cut and pre-sewed everything so we could just get down to business when the time came. (Thank you, KS!)
Thanks for the homemade cupcakes 😉
Last night was the night. Nine of us got together at a friend’s house, enjoyed a cocktail, some cupcakes (thanks, KK — for the homemade cupcakes!), and we made tutus! They turned out super cute, and I think the girls will love them. I hope anyway. It was such fun. And for such a great cause. I’m so proud of my playgroup girls, and I’m so thankful we were able to do this for the GOTR sites that requested them.
Thank you to all of the ladies who came out to help last night! It truly was amazing. 🙂
