Polar Vortex…

I’ve been hoping to post a bunch more but apparently life keeps happening. Ah, I do apologize, friends!
Training has been going well. I was actually supposed to hit 8 miles this past Sunday but ended up taking a rest day instead. Turns out my rest did me well. My body definitely needed a break. This week I will break 100. I’m really looking forward to it. I could have today but I’m sticking to the plan! I don’t think risking injury is worth it, as much as I wanted to keep going this morning.
Let’s discuss this polar vortex nonsense, shall we? All of my friends complain about the weather and not being able to run outside, and while I most definitely agree that this uncharacteristically cold and snowy winter season stinks, I wouldn’t be running outside anyway. You see, I have always been a treadmill runner. I never minded it until I was pregnant and I would see runners all day every day. On the way to and from preschool, while driving to the grocery store, etc. It made me super jealous. I finally told my husband that after the baby came, I would no longer be a treadmill girl. I was taking my talents to the streets!
And I did. And I loved it. Until I was chased by deer all those times… geesh. But I loved how fast I ran, and how far I could go. And I loved not being stuck in the basement.
However, with all of my love for the outdoors and the thrill of hitting the pavement, I am not one for winter running. I hate the cold, first and foremost. I much prefer my warm bed. I also don’t love the idea of running in the pitch dark. I honestly have no interest in spending a small fortune on appropriate winter running apparel. I already have spent a small fortune on shorts, capris, tights, tops, sports bras, SHOES — my gosh, I could open a small shoe store with the amount of running shoes I own.
Not only all of that, I really don’t feel like risking an accident or injury. I live in decently hilly terrain and I just know that I would slip and bite it on some ice, and either really hurt myself or just injure my pride. Pride aside, even if I didn’t slip, I would risk injury to my hips and muscles. When I ran the Turkey Trot it was extremely slick. I was barely running for fear of biting it. And my muscles and hips ached for a week afterward. Sorry, but no. I think I will stick with my treadmill for now.
But back to the vortex… can this winter please just end?! Running aside, trudging back and forth with a baby still in a carrier and a 4 year old who just wants to lolly gag to and from the car is a bit dodgy. In the words of my son, “I am all done.”
