Don't Sweat the Small Stuff

August 29, 2013

Don’t sweat the small stuff.

That’s my daily motto. I wake up every morning, go for a run, fit in some strength conditioning, take a shower, eat breakfast.
And every morning at 8:30 my calendar alert pops up on my phone with “Don’t sweat the small stuff.”
I’ve only been living by these words for about a week but in one week’s time I already feel a weight has been lifted. I have taken to heart the circumstances in my life that I can’t change or control. And it has been a wonderful transformation. I use these words and apply them to everything from “adult temper tantrums” when I want to ring Boo’s neck, all the way up to lost friendships over the years.
Don’t sweat the small stuff. In the grand scheme of things, the small stuff doesn’t matter. When my kids are in high school and staying out late with their friends, am I really going to care if Boo smeared his firetruck with fun dough and rendered it useless? Is it really going to matter if we missed bedtime by about an hour one night in July 2013 when he’s 30 years old with two kids of his own? The answer to both of those is of course no, but I will do my best to remind him of those incidents when he’s a dad. 🙂
The point is, take a page from my husband’s book, and ask yourself if it’s worth it before making a stink about something. If it is, by all means, make a stink. But if it’s not? Don’t sweat the small stuff.
Sweat the big stuff like an awesome workout or a big speech coming up in front of 300 people.
As a teenager and young adult I used to live in the moment. Where did that young, carefree girl go? I’m on a mission to find her.
Hey, it’s Thursday. The work week is almost over. Live in the moment. And start next week on the right foot. Better yet, start the weekend in the positive.
Don’t sweat the small stuff!
