We’re nearing the end of our fabulous 10-day jaunt in bright and sunny Phoenix, Arizona. It’s been a ton of fun. We had an excellent meal for Thanksgiving, complete with a roasted turkey and a fried turkey. We also had a plethora of cakes and pies to choose from for dessert. All of the little cousins ran around and wreaked havoc upon my brother and sister-in-law’s house. All in all, it was a great time.
Boo was fortunate enough to visit the awesome train park on multiple occasions. And per his request, he got to “touch a mountain” twice. Yup, you read it right. We took our two year old to climb a mountain. Well, not really climb. More likely slowly walk and explore up a path on a mountain. But touch a mountain we did! And if you ask him which one, he will proudly point out the window and say, “Pinnacle Peak!” Though it might sound more like “pincal peat” or something similar.
Hubs celebrated his birthday while we were here. It was a fun and relaxing day. I baked and iced a cake, Nana took care of Boo for dinner and bedtime, and I was forced to see a gory, gruesome, overdone movie. But then I was kindly rewarded with my husband’s birthday dinner at In-N-Out burger. No trip out west is complete without a visit there.
Today we will be venturing off to the Arizona Science Center, and then we’ll be home for a second birthday dinner with the family. I will be trying to recreate my mother-in-law’s homemade macaroni and cheese. It’s my husband’s favorite birthday dinner. I hope I am successful! But if not, there’s always chocolate cake to fall back on.
While this trip has been so fun and memorable, and it has been a pleasure to be visiting a sunny city with all of my family, I’ve never been more ready to get home. My son summed it up best this morning when we were pulling into my mom’s driveway. He said, “no, I want to go to my home.” Ten days is a great vacation. But it’s also a really long time to be away from home and all of your belongings, routines and familiarity. Ten days is also a long time to be in someone else’s home. I’m sure my mom will be thrilled to have her space back upon our departure.
I can’t wait to see my dog and my kitty, lay in my own bed, take a shower in my own shower. I can’t wait to snuggle in my warm pajamas and eat healthy food. I can’t wait to run on my treadmill! It’s been five days since my last run, and that was my two-miler when I almost peed myself. I need some redemption.
I know Boo is excited to play with his own toys again. He has had some awesome train sets and books on loan from his older cousins while we’ve been here, but I know he’s looking forward to his own again. He keeps asking for his football helmet. I’m sure he’ll spend hours in the playroom rediscovering his toys once we get back into town. And I’m sure he will be overjoyed at being able to snuggle warmly in his own crib. It will seem monstrous compared to the pack n’ play he’s been snoozing in since our arrival.
We love visiting with family and can’t wait to come back. It’s been such a fun trip. And definitely much needed to escape the monotony of every day life. But right now, at this moment, I cannot wait to get home!
